and i haven't hannded my notice in yet. I will get today but beileve it to be 4 week and planing on staying on for a week between the move.
DON'T. Not until you've exchanged. If it means a few weeks more rent, so be it - better than finding the sale collapses at the last minute, and you've got a week to move out.

does the exchange not normally happen the week before?
Yes - or at least, shorter than your notice period. As above, better to have an overlap than end up homeless. Having an overlap also makes the move less stressful (you don't need to pack everything into a van on one morning).

    Normally, yes.

But in the current situation, it's often simultaneous exchange and completion.

But RIGHT UP UNTIL that point, the vendor can pull out for any or no reason at all - and that may leave you facing homelessness...

Yeah can totally understand, just the thought of paying maybe 3 or 4 weeks rent and not being there. But it covers me

You also don't start the home insurance until the day of exchange, unless the lender wants it in place before releasing funds (like mine did with their interest noted).

Read through a lot of posts as you are getting ahead of yourself!

A few hundred quid to prevent the risk of homelessness? Bargainacious! And, in the grand scheme of what you're spending on buying a house, a drop in the ocean.
