Maybe forward messages to a friend who in turn can forward them in due course to you on the Android
  • I have years of messages that would need forwarding.

Dr.fone was one such software that I found on YouTube. A lot of unhappy viewers and downvotes as they don’t tell you you need to part with cash and that the free version won’t work.

If paid aid apps are the only way, why are people - pages on Google and videos on YT saying that there’s a free way that involves a ton of faff but it works? I don’t have the link to this method as I’m at work but it involved downloading a program called Wazzap or something to that effect on your android and going in to various directories.

I can see why theyd suggest these paid ways as they’ve something to gain from it but they’ve nothing at all to gain from suggesting these free methods, so do they really not work?

Dont say well havent you tried it yet - I was looking up this stuff late last night and then I’ve been up for work from 5:30am. I planned on having a go after I did more researching.

Why would you want to save years of messages ??

One thing that is definite is that WhatsApp is linked to your phone number and once that number is switched across to the android version of the app you cannot view any WhatsApp messages on your old Apple phone at all.

If you keep your old phone you can put the sim back in and reactivate WhatsApp to view your old messages but this then deactivates the version on android.

I went through this process when my wife switched phones as I couldn't find a means of moving them across.

Unfortunately, the advantage of having an encrypted app does have its downsides.

    Because I want to.

And Neil - yeah I found that out. I was able to access them again when I put my SIM back in to my iPhone and fired up WhatsApp again.
im still on my iPhone while I try and get this sorted.

As as I say, there’s one supposed free way that sounds interesting. I’ll link it tonight and see what you think as it could be nonsense.
Aside from that I may have to bite the bullet and pay for the software. Will need to check how much it costs.

Hmmm - well, once you sort out how to save them ... they just get saved!
Mine to DD2 from June 2013 says "you can have my first ever Whatsapp message!!"

I believe the issue with WhatsApp is that being an encrypted service, backing up to a non-encrypted cloud storage solution would make that encryption rather moot. This is why you can only backup to iCloud on an iPhone.

How secure your backups are on an android phone I’ve no idea.
  • Ok so i've looked through a few ways.

There's the paid app ways. Dr.Fone is one. I noticed other software that all seems to basically promise the same thing - to be able to transfer what you want in exchange for you handing over some cash. Maybe the prices vary, maybe they don't. I haven't had a look at any pricing yet.

Then there's the free, or supposedly free ways.

"Extract to" as i mentioned earlier and then sending via email. Ok if just a bit of text but no good if you've exchanged 3000 videos and photos with someone & the chat size is close to 1GB.

Backing up seems to be one getting mentioned. Maybe it's easier to go to iPhone from Android than it is from iPhone to Android I don't know but i can't see how this one works for me as it's tucked away in a hidden section of iCloud.

    And then there's this one:

This could be a load of nonsense but it appears to be the most likely free way to work as far as i see it. I found similar videos last night but can't find them again for some reason but they were basically this link, just using a different Android phone maybe.

So to those who said they tried out the free ways and they didn't work - how did you get on with this method and where/why did it stop working?

To me it sounds the most believable free way to work.

  • That was another. Basically the same thing from what I could see.
