How to transfer Whatsapp messages & media from iPhone to Android?

Getting a bit fed up of running in to brick walls that are YouTubers giving how-to's but not saying in their how to that you'll need to purchase the software they're talking about and that the free version wont cut it.

Some of my chats aren't that large, some are really quite large with plenty photos and videos in there. I just hit Export Chat on one of them and the contents came to almost 700mb data. That's way too much to send via email which was how one how-to showed to do it.

Anyone reading this know of a solution?

  • Thank you for getting me no further forward.

Im seeing plenty of Android to Android, I see a link saying it can’t be done to go from iPhone to android and links for software that you have to pay for.

What i I was hoping for

ok since we’re in a tech forum, why when I reply to a post on this board using my phone does it throw extra letters and words in when I type? Like above, it threw in an extra I???

anyway what I was hoping for was someone who has done this, gone from iPhone to android and was able to transfer their WhatsApp data no problems and could say forget those other ways, they cost/don’t work, this way works so do this.

This link says to back up to your iCloud, delete WhatsApp, hop over to your android and fire WhatsApp up. It’ll ask you to restore your backup.

I’m not convinced. I don’t have time to try it out right now but it’s saying the Android device will just access your iCloud account just like that, no problem? Doesn’t sound very secure. It doesn’t strike me as the sort of thing that would happen so easily.

Use the backup function in Whatsapp to backup to your Google account.  On the new phone use the backup function in WhatsApp to restore from the backup saved in your Google account.

If WhatsApp on an iPhone is linked with an iCloud account, can you add a Google account to it for backing up?

As to the random characters question ... are you pressing individual keys or using a Swype keyboard? I tend to Swype and sometimes get what you describe. (In Facebook etc. I never visit this forum via mobile device). I think it's the predictive part getting things wrong. It'll learn as you go forward and become better.
  • Wongtaa: forgive me but I don’t see the option. When I go to backup the chats it seems I have no option beyond iCloud. I can upload screenshots tonight when I’m home from work but I see no option of uploading to Google at all. The closest I can get is manually backing up each individual chat by clicking the 3 dots and selecting EXPORT chat (not back up). I can then export as a zip file to Google Drive but from what I’ve read this only then allows them to be read in TXT format and not actually synced with WhatsApp on the new phone.

For actually backing up to Google I just don’t see that option.

DoaM: first point - I’ve no idea. Would be handy if you could but it seems you can’t.

Regards the typing, I press individual keys. I’m still on my iPhone. I would imagine it’s something to do with this forum as it doesn’t happen on anything else I type on at all, no other forum, no texts, no nothing. Just MSE.

I tried to do this last year. After a lot of faffing about and trying the free suggestions, (none of which worked, at least not for me) I decided that my chats were worth it to me to pay the £20 for some software to do it. And it did it, quite quickly and simply.

I wouldn't do it now as I realised that, as sentimental as I am, I don't go back and look through my chats much, especially not going back years. I would instead, export my chats so I've still got them, but I wouldn't have to mess about and waste time.
  • IntotheAbyss: can you remember what the software was called that you used, just in case it comes to that?

theres some SMS messages that I’ll export, such as the ones I had with my dad as I would pay a sum to save these alone. Thankfully I’ve already covered that.

As as far as WhatsApp goes though, I have had the need a few times to go back and search for something. Info, a picture that showed important info etc. I had to do that fairly recently too where what I was looking for ended up being back in the middle of 2018.

It was called dr.fone, I've still got it on my PC. I can't remember where I downloaded it from, but it did the job and was pretty straightforward IIRC. I might be misremembering that part but compared to the struggle I had trying to do it for free it was a doddle!

(I will add here that I do not work, nor am I linked to dr.fone in any way and I am not sure if I should have mentioned the software by name so please remove if inappropriate.)

I tried to do this when my wife moved from iPhone to Android. There is no way other then the paid app route.
It appears a major failing on Whatsapp's part not to have this, all the other app's she used on the iPhone transferred over to the new Android phone fine. It was just Whatsapp that was the problem.
