    Why is line 1 here (ie this reply) indented by 1 character?
    Whereas line 2 is not?

    Both lines start at the first character with no leading space added.

    Are you seeing something different?

    Each quoted post is indented.
    You ask why.
    My guess is to make it clear where the start and end of each quoted post is. 
    Much like any indentation, it is to make the document/post easier to understand.

    Looks like it might be a browser issue to me. Try a different browser. What browser are you using?

    Or maybe a device issue?

    As per above, the issue is at your end. I don't see what you're posting about. (Google Chrome browser).

    I have this issue on Safari on ipad, whilst Chrome on ipad is fine.

    Hence it is a browser, specifically Safari, problem.

    Bit odd that other peoples posts look fine on Safari though.
