    We did exactly what the OP is suggesting when we moved in, for exactly same reason. Never looked back....once we had sorted a problem with regular pipe blockages, caused by inadequate degree of fall in the waste pipe, as mentioned above. Recommend enlisting a competent person for that bit.

    Although it's usual to have the shower at one end or the other, you can have it on the long wall as well. It points into the room, but the shower curtain will catch the water. The existing tap already has a shower attachment point, so it would be a tiny job to try attaching a long hose and riser rail to that.
    No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
