windows Millenium (ME) firewall??

Hi,

Can someone help please with recommending a decent free firewall for windows ME. I have been using zonealarm but it seems that i have to subscribe to get the updates and can't afford to at this point in time.

Many thanks

No need to update your firewall. You are using an old unsupported and obsolete operating system, so why do you think that you need the very latest firewall? Previous version of ZA are available here.

using ME, youve got bigger problems than a firewall!
    change to win2k now!

microsoft should have been charged with fraud for even releasing ME.
    Get some gorm.

    Boll*cks!

I've been running an ME on a box for nearly seven years with little trouble.

The problem was with the OEM builders who built them and the less-than-tech-savvy people who bought them.

I found if I kept my drivers up-to-date with any new hardware I installed, it gave me a nice stable machine.

You must be one of the only people with that experience then!

ME is without doubt one of the worse products to come out of Microsoft (and there's been some howlers in their time). It was slow, unstable, insecure, application compatibity issues, problems networking, the list of issues was massive. Better to downgrade to Windows 98 SE. But much better to move at least to W2K, it's pretty stable, secure (well more than the terrible security in 9x/Me).

A great quote from the history of Windows from Wikipedia: "Windows Me attempted to implement a number of new technologies for Microsoft: most notably publicized was "Universal Plug and Play." However, the OS was heavily criticized for its lack of compatibility and stability and it was even rated by PC World as the fourth worst product of all time."

I can't think of a single reason why anyone should be using Windows ME... But if it works for you, so be it. I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole, let alone going online with it - after all MS no longer provides any security updates for it as they've rendered it obsolete.

I run Windoze from 95 up to Vista (strange clients), and ME really isn't that bad (much more compatible for USB devices than 98) - surely you can't seriously think ME is worse than 98 (or even 98SE)..?

I can and I do :) I've worked in the industry for many years. ME is a fault ridden mess, 98 may not compatible with USB directly, 98 SE is. I certainly wouldn't be using any of these OSes this day and age for a on-line PC, even for a home user.

None of my clients use anything less than Windows 2000 Pro, some are small outfits, others massive corporates with hundreds of staff over multiple sites. Any commercial clients being advised to use 9x or ME are being offered extremely bad advice.

You can't be serious? Clients with 95 or ME?? Do you know why it's so bad, or why they are still using it? If they are paying you for advice, I suggest you move them into at least the 20th century, if not the 21st

Seconded - Win 2K Pro at a minimum.
  • Thankyou Donnie, I think this is the version that i have but it keeps on saying that it requires updates and that i need to subscribe. I need a firewall that works without the need for subscribing if there is one.

As for all the other comments who had nothing helpful to say, I did not ask for anyone to provide me with their opinion of windows ME, so please put a hold on the verbal diarrhoea in future.
