Seller cancelled after item received.

Bought iPhone on eBay, seller asked not to use PayPal, but buyer refused and paid through PayPal and then received the item. Papal have now sent a message saying seller has cancelled the order and the item must be returned.
Is this a scam, surely there is no obligation to return the goods? However I can’t understand how or why this would happen.
Anyone have knowledge of this and could enlighten me? Thank you

Are you the buyer or the seller?  Did the payment bounce (e-cheque?)

As well as these excellent points- what does the sale actually show like in your paypal and in ebay?

Assuming this is some dim seller, no they can't just cancel anything now, the contract for offer and purchase has finished .

Sorry I am buyer the payment went through PayPal Balance no echeque. So as far as o can see it is exactly the same as any other completed transaction. However I have an email from eBay to say seller has cancelled and I need to return the item. Could the seller refuse my PayPal transaction?

Have you actually logged into PayPal to check? Lots of bogus emails that look like they're from PayPal but aren't!

Unless you've had a FULL refund, I would not be sending anything back. Even then, I'd be wary about sending it back as you can't just cancel after a sale.

Hopefully the phone won't end up being blocked due to being stolen or something!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Why don't you just contact the seller via ebay messages and ask why there was a request for cancellation. I would have done this before coming on here as they might have a reasonable explanation or may have just made an error and incorrectly requested a cancellation. If there is no response then leave it but this could possibly ring alarm bells as to the actual item you have received.

I think I came on here as I have never heard of this and I know there are experienced sellers and you all know the ins and outs and I don’t want to get caught up in a scam (if I haven’t already)  I should have withdrew as soon as he started asking not to go through PayPal. Ultimately I want to ignore the seller and keep the item but didn’t know if I would make a bad situation worse.

I wouldn’t be returning anything with or without a refund, why should buyer be out of pocket for return postage?

This eBay message is definitely in your messages when you log in safely to eBay?

Also what exactly do ebay say about the return , are they providing a pre paid fully tracked label ?

I’d be doing nothing at all here until i’d spoken to eBay and assuming there is a return label and you have received a full refund, I would be asking them what is actually going on and Also ask if you can refuse the cancellation.

I bit the bullet and messaged seller to ask why and got a message straight back saying PayPal won’t pay him for 90 days. I will ring eBay and PayPal but I think it is fishy.

Don't bother ringing ebay.  If you are happy with the item then don't do anything, not even reply to messages.

It could be the seller thinks he can cancel for a refund of his selling fees...? Either way, ignore and enjoy your item.
