Did you buy the car privately or from a dealer? Makes a big difference to your rights.

Unforgiveable to not check the oil. So simple, so easy. Or is it unforgiving, I forget.0

No flashing lights on the dash to warn of pending doom, with little oil in the engine.....Life in the slow lane0

My belief is no warranty is ever going to pay out if a car lunches itself owing to low oil
I hope the OP learns the ABC of buying second hand cars privately

NotMyCar123 said:Hi,
So I'll try to keep this concise. About a month ago I bought my dream car, have wanted it since I was a teenager. Two weeks ago the engine tore itself to bits. I was fuming when I found out he had sold it with no oil in the engine(!) despite having told me he serviced it, and then I rang up the DVLA to chase up the V5 so I can sell it for spares, and they had no record of him transferring ownership, which he claimed to have done online whilst I was there!
So now I have a broken car that I don't legally own. My question is, what is my legal recourse with regards to potentially getting my money back for a car I've never owned, which was sold to me with no oil in the engine. The car is obviously not as I bought it. I have no clue when it comes to any of this stuff so any help at all would be really appreciated!
Thanks
JNever believe anything a car seller tells you. "Owned by old lady who only used it to go to church", "I am not even covering my costs at that price", "I have given it a service".1 -
Not sure you have much recourse, if you didn't check the oil level yourself then its your responsibility.
Not accusing you of anything, I myself bought a car last week and didn't occur to me to check the oil level - found out when i got home that it was near empty of oil. But don't think you have the "right" to a refund from a private seller when you could have checkd the oil before purchase.0 -
