Obtaining Title deeds from Barclays

My Dad has very little time left, maybe weeks to live and we are trying to sort out Power of Attorney,   it’s actually doubtful whether it will go through in time.
He banks with Barclays and is convinced they hold his house deeds,  which we urgently need because the house isn’t registered with the land registry!  It’s a good job I checked.
He can’t ring and speak to them as he had a stroke whilst in hospital ( terminal cancer and he had a serious infection)  his speech is badly affected but he still has capacity,  although he does get confused.
The mortgage (Woolwich)  was paid off 30 years ago,  we have found  all the paperwork pertaining to it, thankfully they never threw any paperwork away, ever, going by the mountains of paperwork we’ve found.
On the Barclays site it mentions Third party account access but the account holder has to arrange it,  he simply isn’t able.
I fear it’s going to be a case if waiting for the inevitable and then trying to deal with it all.  I’m just very worried that Barclays might be awful to deal with, I’m executor and beneficiary.
My worst fear is no deeds forthcoming and having to have a Solicitor reconstitute the deeds,  although it should be straightforward with lots of evidence of 50 years house ownership?
I just wonder if anyone has gone through a similar problem, especially when dealing with Barclays?

I have eventually received good news from Barclay's!
They have located the original deeds and such will be with me within three weeks!
The house was purchased in 1965 and was registered in 1973 upon a second mortgage.
I just wanted the originals for historical purposes really but also as a matter of principal - they are mine!

You might type up a letter of enquiry to Barclays for your father to sign?

Thanks,  Would I take it to his local  branch or is there an address to send it to?
I’m so stressed out,  logical thinking seems to have vanished.

I would phone his Branch and ask first if they hold them .

Does this help at all? Worth a try?

Got a bit worried by this thread. Have an old Woolwich mortgage with only £1 outstanding since 1997. Until 2010 Woolwich charged £10/year to store deeds. Since Barclays don't charge & no contact since.

Today contacted them & there is absolutely no problem:

0800 022 4022 works (once you get through the auto-idiot recordings)

Mortgage Loan Services, PO Box 8575, Leicester, LE18 9AW is still the correct address.

Deeds are in deep storage and will not be digitised and then destroyed.

By 2005 the Land Registry entry would have been made.

Down to me to call for the deeds when I want them.

    Hope this helps others.
  • Hi hope someone can help me ... like above our mortgage was paid off about 10 years ago in which time my husband and i got divorced i was awarded the house but have no legal documents to prove that and the deeds were used to supposedly have my ex husband signed off them to make me sole owner of the property trouble is my husband said he signed them and returned them to his solicitor but from there they have dissapeared and his solicitor will not get back to me about where they are ....even though i used yet another solicitor and even more money to retrieve them they ignore all communication why? i have contacted the HM land register and paid for the deeds information ...and i only received old information with both my ex husbands name and mine on them still so husbands solicitor did not send them back there updated.... so i tried to update them myself to make me sole owner of my property but this was so unbelievably complicated and technical for me i gave up ... at my age even with a video explaining so much and forms to fill in surely there must be an easier way to do this i am not stupid but we are not all tech whiz kids i just wonder where my deeds are and why werent this dealt with and husband signed them off returned them off then its a mystery where they are and why they wont correspond at all about this thanks for any help.
  • You should start a new thread instead of piggy-backing this one and please use some punctuation.  Makes it much easier to read that way.

Who awarded you the house? Was it as part of a court-approved financial settlement?
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!
  •  Hi ....Yes it was a court approved financial settlement
