Hi folks,
Forgive me if this has been asked before!
After paying off my mortgage with the Woolwich in 1993, I had my deeds stored with the woolwich deedstore.
There was a storage fee of £10.00 per year, the last receipt for which I have managed to find is from 2004.
I having been trying without success to contact the deedstore in order to have my deeds returned.
I am aware that Barclays have taken over the Woolwich and have tried several supplied phone numbers and email.
Please can somebody advise, I'm becoming desperate !
Regards,
Chris.

UK Land Registry and £8 later your problem will be solved - and you will be better off (simply write to Woolwich at address on last invoice/receipt + head office and tell them service no longer required. Cancel any standing order/DD and if you are in a bad mood tell them that due to obvious inability to provide the service contracted you want your money back).
all part of the service ........

Thanks for the reply.
I really want the original deeds back!
Also the address for the woolwich deedstore is no more as they've sold the premises!0 -
Unless you have a specific historic interest (I used to have a fabulous property where the deed pack - only photocopies - was a series of ribbon bound history lessons) the original docs effectively ceased to exist once (most have) they became title register documents.
I believe that the land registry can give you some other historical stuff (at extra cost) - give them a call, thoroughly helpful people.
As regards the 'depository address' it should forward but that is why I also suggested head office.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Land Registry will not hold any original documents and as Senior Paper Monitor explains often copies are all that remain. As such there is little point in contacting us for anything which pre-dates first registration of the property, which I think is what you are after.
The only available option is to pursue it with Barclays I'm afraid.“Official Company Representative

Those deed store arrangements usually mean that the lender has not removed their charge from the property.
You could check with the land registry to make sure that the Woolwich / Barclays still have their charge registered. If they do have it registered, then they should have the deeds too.
In this electronic age, the deeds are no longer the important documents they once were, but they are historical documents, so it would be nice to have them if you want them.Early retired - 18th December 2014

If the mortgage was repaid in 1993, when did you buy the property? Was it registered land then? Is there a current Land Registry record?
If not, the original deeds will be required when you need to register the property for the first time, on sale perhaps?I am a mortgage broker. I have eventually received good news from Barclay's!
They have located the original deeds and such will be with me within three weeks!
The house was purchased in 1965 and was registered in 1973 upon a second mortgage.
I just wanted the originals for historical purposes really but also as a matter of principal - they are mine!
Many thanks for the kind and informative replys, all very much appreciated.0 -
Barclays/Woolwich are also holding our deeds and I have been trying to get them back. I keep having to go through their dire Indian call centres  which really is a nightmare.
Anyone, thinking of banking / dealing with Barclays think again - their Indian call centres are awful and will take years of your life.
OP hope you got your deeds back...
By the way, HSBC lost my father's deeds and claimed to never have them. It was only by some impressive detective work on my behalf that I was able to prove that they did have them (which they did).
Seriously, buy yourself a fire proof box and store them at home!Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you.0 -
