Travel insurance - what does it still cover if you don't renew?

Got a brilliant deal for Lat Am and booked with BA Nov 2019. Travel will be end of Oct 2020 (hopefully!).  However in April 2020 I downgraded our current account to a free one - we didn't need all the extras we were paying for, inc the travel insurance, as we couldn't use them...  I will likely re start the Nationwide FlexPlus account mid October so as we have travel cover  but what is the status of my current cover for this trip as I effectively have no policy at the moment?  Any ideas?  Thanks

Sounds like you have no cover
As you had a holiday booked, you were using the travel insurance so probably shouldn't have cancelled it

As you do not have travel insurance, then I would assume it does not cover anything? You are saying you downgraded your account and you did not need travel insurance.

You are also saying you will get travel insurance mid October for travel end of October?

Perhaps not a good idea to leave it that late, ideally insurance should commence on day you booked with Lat Am.

Perhaps you can clarify your post / question a little?

If you open a new FlexPlus account, you will not be covered for Coronavirus related travel claims. This is because it is a known and anticipated risk.

If you want cover for the cancellation happening now or before October, you need cover now.
You won't be covered if something happens before the travel date, and any cover when re-instated will likely removal most or all COVID / pandemic related cover.

Your previous insurance cover ended when you closed that account.  Until you open a new account which includes travel insurance you have no cover.

    Thanks for clarifying all.
I thought maybe the insurer funded at point of booking might still have some liability.
I think they are all denying as much Covid related claims as possible anyway?

I'll pop cover back on for start October and if I get the virus and can't go then I guess they will deny. Need to check cover for Covid illness when actually abroad too. Are they all writing this out now too I wonder?

    Cheers

It has always been the case that if you closed or downgraded a bank account with travel insurance that the policy is closed full stop at that time.
This has nothing to do with Covid19.

"Need to check cover for Covid illness when actually abroad too."
Going down with the virus in the UK would be bad enough - but contracting it abroad without appropriate medical cover insurance is the absolute worst case scenario.
    God forbid either occurs.
I'm curious to know why you say that you would'nt use the extras like travel insurance on the account that you closed ?
Did you have alternative cover through another provider at the same time ?

No its just that as we are not permitted to travel so it's pointless to pay for travel insurance.  I've done the same with my dental cover - why pay it when you can't see a dentist?  Similarly EL/PL insurance for the business when we are all furloughed and not permitted to operate. And SORN for a car you can't drive currently.

I'll need to check any Covid19 caveats when i do resurrect cover...

I had toothache 2 weeks ago and managed to see a dentist to get the tooth removed.
In fact I got the appointment the same day I contacted the dentist, normally that would take a day or 2.
    And it was free.
