Furloughed but others brought in to do job

I don't have any advice, but I think it might be more common than you would think. My employer has furloughed people (not through shielding/childcare/health related issues) and then hired in other (permanent) employees to do the same job.0

me neither, both of them together is the equivalent to one full time employee. unfortunately she cant ask as she heard about it from others and has not actually been told this by the employer. one of them is 70 and my mum early 60's so to me looks like they are going to loose their jobs at the end of this.sharpe106 said:Not sure why contracters would be any cheaper. That doesn't seem right and legal to me although I know if redundancies happen during furlough that after they can advertise the same job that the person was made redundant from. its all not very clear what's allowed and what isn't at the moment.Gonna-be-debt-free said:I don't have any advice, but I think it might be more common than you would think. I think in my case, they are taking advantage of the job market. It's a highly skilled job, and its usually difficult to recruit people for what we want to pay them. I suspect the logic is that people with the skills can be hired more cheaply now, and then inertia will prevent them from looking around later when the job market picks up.mci2185 said:

Your rights as an employee are not affected by being on furlough, including redundancy rights."
