You are a graphic designer, need very specific features yet bought from Currys??

As you have tested it beyond what would be feasible in a store, then although you can return it, Currys can deduct an amount for not returning it in the same condition.

I would suggest purchasing from a specialist PC store who can answer your specific questions about screen requirements. Currys do not have this sort of knowledge.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

This was my initial reaction too. Currys is probably the last place I'd buy a laptop from, even without any specialist requirements.
The laptop is fit for purpose no doubt, even if not for your specific purposes (and even that is subjective)

It may sound hard but I agree with the comments above. A family member does graphic design as a sideline, not even their main employment- and they put considerable effort into researching PCs, talking to people on forums that used high spec brands to get real opinions- checked journals and publications for research. This was before lockdown- but they knew there was no point in just going to a high street shop and buying a normal laptop as it almost certainly would have features they didn't want but more importantly not have features that were essential for their work.

They ended up with a machine that they had never seen or handled in a shop and which could be slightly customised before purchase for their exact requirement based on what other users had said they liked or disliked about the use.

I am a low tech user but even for my last PC I took advice to make sure I bought what I needed and didn't pay for extras that I wouldn't use, or go without something that I would need.

However, your rights are that you can request a return and then negotiate with Curry's as to what percentage is to be taken off for use, basically it will be the difference between the brand new cost you paid and what it is worth as a second hand machine.

Can you satisfy my cynical side and tell us what the computer is, make, model and specs please otherwise this could be a newbie wind-up.
I know Domestos kills 99% of germs, but I'm worried about the 1% that got away.

Faulty or not, that's not the issue at hand. I have the right to change my mind as a customer, like anything else.
Yes but apart from rights, you also have obligations and one of those obligations is that whilst you are indeed allowed to turn the computer on in order to test the  "nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods,", you are only entitled to do this to the same degree that would be permissible in a shop.
    This:

was further down the "Which" page that you quoted from.
Would Currys allow you to go into a store and use a laptop for a few hours and install and run your own software? If the answer is no then by doing so in your own home you have gone beyond what is reasonable and so Currys are entitled to refuse a full refund.

Have you actually tried to change the screen settings? I find it hard to believe that any lap top has a screen as you describe unless it is faulty. The default settings may be too dark for you but you should easily be able to turn the brightness up.
I accept I could've done more research but there is only so much you can determine when buying online since we can't physically see items now due to COVID-19.
The most cursory research would have told you that Curry's are a nightmare if you want to return anything, even if the item is dead on arrival, never mind just a change of mind.

Apart from the screen is the laptop up to the job? If so it might work out cheaper to get a decent, calibrated monitor and plug it into your laptop.

Unless the OP needs to be mobile with it, that's a good idea. It'll also allow the OP to have a much larger screen to work from - probably a benefit for graphics design work.

If the OP is a graphic designer by trade and the laptop was purchased for use in their job, it might well be the case that the CCR right of return doesn't even apply.
