Direct Debit not taken

My active direct debit to, as normal, pay my credit card statement balance in full, has not been taken this month. My next statement is due on 11 June. I understand systems are slow with reduced staff but I am worried about this. Any reassurance will be appreciated.  If I make a debit card payment, with an active direct debit in place to pay in full on 03 June I worry that two payments will be taken - one the direct debit and also the debit card payment.

I felt as if I had to jump through hoops on the telephone automated system and eventually the automated system said it was unable to handle my call.  I sent a secure message when logged into my account and it said I would receive  a reply in five working days.  My active direct debit to pay in full is already late because they have not requested it and my next Statement is due in two days. I checked my bank and the funds are there as well as the active direct debit.

I always pay in full by direct debit and I am worried about this and cannot get through on the telephone at all.  It is Capital One and I don't  want a late payment as I have never not paid in full by direct debit.  It us quite a big statement amount and I am anxious to pay in full.

I understand, with the awful Covid-19 related problems  at present, that delays are inevitable but I worry that they can just say they are unable to handle my call and cannot reply to secure message for five working days. I even telephoned their 24 hour number at 2 a.m. and still my call could not be handled - I was referred to on line then cut off.

I'll be very glad of any reassurance or to know if this is happening to any other Capital One credit card customers. My bank account seems to be O.K.

This happened to me last year but I never noticed. They just never took it. I then manually paid it when I noticed and they did file a late payment. I disputed it and won. Just keep your eye on it only thing you can do. Aslong as you've proof you had available funds and the direct debit was in place

Thanks very much for replying  jazzyja.  I'll keep checking.  It's the thought of, wrongly, getting a late payment that troubles me and,  so far,  not being able to get through by telephone.

Have you tried sending a secure message via a web browser? Just to put on record that you've spotted that the direct debit appears not to have been taken, and that you can't reach them by telephone? At least by sending the secure message you'll have on file the fact you've tried to contact them, and if the direct debit has failed to collect, they can see you have been actively trying to resolve it.

  • Thank you cymruchris.  I have done that with the link.  On logging in again this afternoon I see that there is no payment pending and nothing outstanding.  My ststement is due on 11 June and I have the full amount of money available to pay.

Thank you   all for replying - I feel better about it now and 11 June is only a few days away before I can see what the Statemet says.

I take it you have not asked for a payment holiday?

I think if I was in your position and could afford it, I'd be tempted to make a minimum payment by debit card, especially if you've been using the card since your last statement.

Yes, I agree, make the minimum payment.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

Did they take the direct debit in the end?

Sorry for the delay in replying, cymruchris. No they did not take the direct debit.  I eventually found out that a refund for a purchase made after the statement date was being applied as a credit although there was still a balance to pay - I always pay any balance in full every month.  This balance is being added to my next statement with no interest charge.

I 'double checked' with both my bank and the credit card company and both confirmed my direct debit is active and my account always had enough funds to pay, had the direct debit balance payment been requested.

Sorry again for not replying sooner, cymruchris.
