Reclaiming mis-sold insurance on behalf of my 91 yo Grandmother

Hi! My 91yo Grandmother has been paying insurance for her old Sky box for years, she has no need for it, and it was sold to her over the phone - can i claim some of these payments back for her? Any advice greatly appreciated!

No.  But she should cancel it if she no longer needs it.

Is it actually real sky insurance or a scam pretending to insurance? This has been an area where scams have been active.  Especially by phone.

If its a real insurance policy then she makes her complaint. As simple as that.

    They are not scams.
    They are legitimate companies.
Presumably she will have some documents with terms and conditions listed.

make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Thanks. It seems to be legit, I’ve cancelled it for her, but I’m unhappy about a vulnerable elderly person being sold insurance that she does not need over the phone. Thought there might  be precedence in claiming some back for her.

Perhaps she had full capacity when originally taking the insurance out. Getting older doesn't make everyone stupid.
My late mother was still organising keep fit classes at 86.

If it was a reputable company instead of going in guns blazing, you can explain the circumstances and ask nicely. They may return the monies to her, they may not.
If they don't, you don't have a leg to stand on with regards to threatening them with anything. They did nothng wrong. Your nan did by not checking her bank accounts regularly.

elisroberts - it's good to see you taking an interest in your Gran's affairs.
A few other things to consider - has anyone got POA for her, has she a will, any funeral wishes, house insurance (often rolls on and becomes expensive) , council tax (single person), electric, gas ……………………….

If your grandmother had Sky then for the the first 12months Sky would be responsible for any repair needed. Once the guarantee period is up, householders are responsible for paying for any repairs or labour needed to correct it should something go wrong. So it's possible this was an insurance your grandmother decided she needed at the time so that she wouldn't have to pay if something went wrong with the box.

Many times over the years I've been contacted by phone & letter regarding taking out such insurance, but my policy has always been that, once I'm out of contract term if something goes wrong I'll just phone up to cancel my Sky subscription as then they are happy enough to offer you a free repair/replacement rather than lose you as a customer.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

With SkyQ you only rent the equipment - so if it goes wrong they have to fix/replace it.  No need for insurance.
Yes, I know that doesn't cover accidental damage - but with no kids/dogs in the house we are willing to take that risk.
