Lots of people have worked all through the lockdown and they live with an extremely vulnerable person who's also received the shielding letter. There's people on here that have posted. They just have to stick to strict hygiene rules when returning home from work, this will include removing shoes before entering the home. Taking off your clothes and putting them straight into the wash, wiping any surfaces they touch and then showering/bathing straight away. They have continued to do this with no problems at all.
Whether or not she returns to work is her decision but this isn't going to go away over night, it's going to be the new normal for quite some time.
Im one of those people, well I was until I was put on furlough :(

OP, following strict hygiene measures when returning to the home will make the risk pretty negligible to anyone she is shielding

If it is her that has been told to shield she needs to download a sick note and claim SSP
Thank you - its not the adult but the child that is shielding

With the exception of discussing it with them and trying to get them to extend unpaid leave not much else you can really do,

What happens if they never find a vaccine?
That is 50/50. Hoepfully with a useful  track and testing in place by Dec and everyone having to wear masks in public this would massively reduce risk and then most people even high risk people that work would return to work.  The young lady I'm on about have a massive mortage and though her 8 hours money is not great it does make a differecne and she is worried about the ignorant parasites that ignore social distancing and not wear masks in public and the hope is this will change when the gov starts to fine people for not following the rules.

I don’t wear a mask in public and resent being labelled a parasite. The evidence is NOT there.
Unlike a lot of people (it seems) I have continued to work full time in a hospital and remain fit and well
Maybe you need to stop being so dramatic and finding reasons to not do something.
This is an emotive subject and people are becoming very sick or worse as many refuse to wear masks and even ignore the distancing rules. I blame the gov for not enfrocing this with fines. The evidence is CLEAR - wearing a face mask even a home made one reduces the spread of this hideous virus. I can post a link if you want.

The only time I've ever worn a mask during this whole situation (could use another word but I'd get ppr'd) is when I used a train for the 1st time this week.

Didn't need the govt to impose their current thoughts on the situation as quite frankly I don't think they know what the situation is. I will use my instincts instead as they seem to be way ahead of the govt.

As for the original question, what would the parents do for childcare?

About child care, that is the next problem as it is the husbands parents that usally look after their grandchild and both are close to their 70's and don't go out to the shops etc other than for a walk when its quiet in the culdesac they live in - they too would be at risk and they have mentioned the shielding and this in their email

The tone of your posts is making matters emotive. Blame the Government, blame the Government. Change the record.

My older son has a shielding letter, followed by a text saying that he needs to stay in until at least 30th June. My younger son was working before being furloughed, but just followed strict hygiene measures. He returns to work next week. Both still live at home. I do the shopping, and again, I follow strict hygiene measures when I come in. I don't wear a mask when I'm out, although the ones that we have ordered arrived yesterday. I'm not an ignorant parasite.
It's possible to return to work as others have said.
Regarding the huge mortgage - have they asked for a mortgage holiday? It may not be a suitable solution for them, but could be wrth considering.

As supermarket workers have been one of the few groups to remain in work, and in constant contact with the public, then it would have been highlighted by now if they were shown to have had a greater incidence of contracting the virus compared to the population as a whole.

Read I think it was BBC the other day that expects suggest about 6,000 new cases in total a day at the moment, so out of over 70 million people not that much chance of getting of it. Things need to be put into perspective, and yes I go to work still with somebody shielding at home.
