Hello
I have a  multicurrency cash passport travel money card. I have been advised that they are no longer doing this card, and that I could not transfer to a new cash card with them. I spoke with Cash Passport office on the telephone, not much help really, lady just kept saying to use the monies or loose them. !!
They advised that I have to use the monies on this existing card before 30th June 2020 otherwise I will loose the monies currently on this card. Approximately on the card I have €555 and $2,200. I definitely dont want to loose this amount of money, but as I cannot transfer to another cash passport card. How can I take the monies out and transfer to a different travel card, like the Halifax or Santander ones?

I know if I take the monies out using the ATM, I will be charged the conversion fee, exchange rates, and the fee for using the ATM. I worked it out I would loose several hundred pounds by doing this.
I cannot go into the travel bureau in tesco where I purchased the cash passport as at present no travel bureaus are open to discuss face to face.

I would be very grateful for any help on this?
thanks

Depending on the maximum you can withdraw at one time, I'd be very surprised if your will lose several hundred pounds by using the ATM for withdrawal.  Unfortunately, even if that is the case it is better than the apparent alternative of losing it all.

I'm not aware of similar travel cards being offered by Halifax or Santander. They both offer credit cards that offer competitive rates when used abroad but they are simply credit cards that operate in £ sterling not euro or US dollars.

There are a few atms around the country that dispense euro and dollar notes and some charge little or no commission. These are typically in London and other major cities plus some airports. If you say where you live then it may be possible to locate one reasonably close. It may take a few visits but it's better than losing the money.

You could try what I did 2+ years ago to unload euros from my FairFX card:

Open a Revolut account on their phone app if you don't already have one (I guess not, or you wouldn't be using Travelex) and familiarise yourself with how it works, see FAQs.

Then try to use your cash passport card to top-up your Revolut USD balance. If accepted, the dollars can then be exchanged to pounds at the perfect interbank exchange rate (weekdays) and withdrawn to your bank account without fees. Similarly with the euros.

If you try this and it works, please let us know.

She may never return, but stated that she bought it at Tesco. However I think that Cash Passport cards in general were supplied by Travelex.

  • I am guessing that it is a Travelex card which allowed you to store multiple currencies on the card. In theory it sounded very good from the way the product was marketed and I used it for a number of years finding it very useful and flexible apart from a very poor online platform and poor customer service. Travelex has had recent history however, being crippled by a ransomeware attack earlier in the year. The company virtually ceased trading operations altogether for a number of weeks. I decided that I wanted to cash in my balances of euros and US dollars. The only practical way to do this as I had no travel plans, was to go to my local Travelex shop (they are all based in airport terminals) and receive the cash equivalent in UK sterling at a very poor rate of exchange. Lost a couple of hundred pounds but glad to be away from the company which I suspected at the time was about to go bust even despite its very wealthy owners. Suggest you locate your local store which will presumably be at your nearest airport and pay them a visit if COVID regulations permit.
