Credit card for credit building

Is a credit card still worth having in terms of making me an ideal borrower for the future?

I’m currently living at home and have just lost my job thanks to covid 19.
Since I have a little spare time on my hands I’ve decided to focus a bit more on my finances, I currently have a 999 credit rating, a nice amount of savings and 2 debit cards that have never been in negativity. However I’ve never had a credit card and I’m just thinking that by having one it may make me seem a more reliable person should I (hopefully) apply for a mortgage.

would now be a good time to apply, given that I’m technically unemployed, or, am I best to carry on as I am ?

Many thanks for any help

* update 7/6/20

So I originally deleted this post and I’m sorry for any problems I caused, I didn’t want to do anything that may cause a problem on the forum so have re posted the thread.
Thank you all for your replies, I take your point about waiting to get back into employment before applying - I’m not a chancer by any means and have sufficient savings to pay off any debt in full at the end of every month.. it was just as I said to try and build credit.
As this is my first time out of work since I left education I’ve never really thought about any need for a credit card because believe it or not, I only buy what I can afford and if I want something I save up for it..

Any way like I say, thank you for replies

    Your score of 999 means absolutely nothing at all no lender uses it, also having 2 debit cards means nothing as these are not reported to the CRAs either.

     Also your savings aren’t reported to CRAs either and won’t be taken into account when you apply for a financial product.

    What matters is your credit history and how you have managed your current credit accounts.

    Being unemployed how are you going to pay your credit card bill when it comes in?

    If you are going to apply for a credit card then it maybe best to apply for a credit building card such as Vanquis, Aqua, Marbles or Capital One.

    I suspect they will use savings to pay the cards off.
    OP get a new job and then get a card.

    I suggest you wait until you get a job before applying for credit.
