    You cannot threaten a counterclaim.

    Why not?
You never know how far you can go until you go too far.

    Because
    - theyve already got a claim and so have a deadline
    - they wont have time to communicate with a PPC, giving them the min 14 days notice to deal with a LBC
They have a choice of counterclaiming or not.

That does not mean that you cannot still threaten them with one.

Whilst I appreciate that you mean well, you are not being entirely accurate.

    OK
It is technically possible to threaten them with a counterclaim
It is, however, almost certainly a waste of time and effort that is better put to actually, you know, filing a counterclaim.
I tend to cut through the useless, pointless actions and go straight for what might actually have an effect.

    Thank you

I have more than enough of both

I tend to query misleading statements

You might. Does the OP? When theyre up against a deadline?
OP - do or do not. Dont threaten. We have seen 1 instance to my knowledge where a threat of a claim or counterclaim has produced any results.

I will do exactly that today (threaten counter claim) and AOS.

Re: counter claim. Would I have to pay to launch one and do you know how much time is involved in doing so? E.g. is it similar to the time invested in defending my case?
Google tells you the fees for court claims in the small claims track!  A typical £900 counter claim, such as a couple of cass currently in progress through the courts against a well-known parking firm (cases that I am aware of) costs just £60 and you simply add the counterclaim words under the defence words...

Appreciate the advice, I will star writing up my defence. I'd never actually heard of the term estoppel until mentioned on here,so you've saved us a fair bit of anxiety!
