Go to your online account on their website and click 'can I upgrade' to see what the computer says....
I always try to steer clear of call centre operators as they regularly gets things wrong and it's  your word against theirs.
  • I got into my account and it says I can upgrade on 8 Sept that is still over 24 mths

You are paying for the network not the phone .

They offer an "early" upgrade in an attempt to lock you in for a new period, probably 24 months unless you are careful. Is the £18 pm for phone and minutes/date or just minutes/data?
Did Vodafone confirm why your contract went on to December? Online chat may be best for this if you have some patience!
  • Online chat being honest tell customers what they want to hear more than what is true. I know that customers who upgrade then two years later find out that they still have x number of months left on their plans means that they have done an early upgrade. This essentially means the number of months a customer upgrades early carries over to the next contract. for example if they upgrade 4 months early then a 24 month contract becomes a 28 month contract. Also means that the chance of paying an upfront cost or early upgrade fee is reduced.
    Remaining Debt - starting - £1609.44/current - £1457.73

What does your original email say from Vodafone? It should list the start and minimum commitment end date.
