Replacement engines are normally not new engines. They are second hand from accident damaged or scrapped cars.
Thanks and interesting to know, but it is not possible to know this as fact in my situation.

My question still stands, should I expect a replacement engine to last longer than 4 years, with consideration the very same garage have completed all regular maintenance/servicing during my ownershp of the vehicle?

It should but you don't know the history of the replacement engine. Anyway you normally end up paying. They don't normally replace an engine for £500. That sounds as though they wrecked it and they knew they had wrecked it.

Which engine is this out of interest, a diesel tdi or petrol TSI variant by any chance?
1.4 TSi (GT version with 160bhp).
So the EA189 diesel emissions situation is completely and utterly irrelevant...

As far as Fred goes, ignore him. The entire motor industry is a conspiracy theory. VW will simply not have put a used engine from ebay in under warranty...

If the same problem has occurred, I will not be paying for a repair. If I have no recourse or cannot negotiate a compromise, I will buy a new car.
    And... what, scrap this one?

The 1.4 TSi is not VWs finest hour.  Depending on the age of the car it may not be a surprise it failed as they kept changing the design in an effort to build something which didn't cost them in warranty claims.

Early ones had turbo and supercharger, then they tried turbo with belts, then they tried chain cam, then they went back to a belt, they all had inherent problems. They then decided enough was enough and a further redesign saw them become 1.5TSi.

The chain cam was probably the worst of the bunch as many of the chains weren't manufactured correctly,

How much is the car worth in a working condition?

As I have already suggested, the emissions situation may have only been a factor in their decision making to offer goodwill at that time, not a technical one. I will leave that to the side now.

...and yes, I will not have the car repaired if another engine is required at full cost. Scrap it or sell it as spares/repairs or breaking is most likely. Engine problems aside, the car is worth about £4000. An engine replacement will cost about the same as the current value of the car.

I should add, that I am awaiting for the car to be looked at and diagnosed, so I am approaching this with a 'worse case scenario' mindset.

£4000 - £4500. Annoyingly, the car is cosmetically (especially the interior) superb.

With replacements engines you're never sure of their history. There are a lot of connections to be made. These CAN be done perfectly but garages don't often take the car and attention needed to do the job properly. New engines are sometimes seen as a plus point for the unsuspecting in a car advert. I would run a mile myself. You could get someone to put another replacement in but it is a gamble. People often sell them on quickly and then have a very unhappy buyer on their hands.

I imagine if you take it to somewhere like we buy any car.com they will check the engine number. If I buy a second hand car I always check the engine number matches the V5C. I would never buy a car with a replacement engine.

A brand new engine, like last time, may be £4k.

A used engine, as Fred poo-pooed, will be nowhere near.

And, again, Fred has revealed his cluelessness. The V5C shows the current engine number - and it's trivial to update with DVLA after a change. It doesn't show any previous engine numbers. There is no way to know that an engine has been changed from the documentation, and no great issue inherent in having had one changed.
