What benefits can a Uni leaver claim?

My Son has just left Uni. As he can't find a job I told him to claim JSA.
He completed an online claim but they have told him as he hasn't paid into the system he is entitled to nothing.
He's 21. When at Uni he had some part time jobs, but didn't earn enough to pay tax or NI.
So, what benefits can he claim? He lives at home with us at the moment and has no savings

He needs to claim universal credit1

If he's received a student loan then this is classed as income when claiming UC. Students can't claim UC unless they are claiming a disability benefit such as PIP/DLA. He won't be able to claim UC until his course officially ends.

As poppy stated, he is not eligible to claim benefits until his course has officially ended. His University will be able to provide him with the full term dates. The day after his course officially ends, he should make a claim online for Universal Credit. If he tries to claim before that date, his claim will be closed as ineligible and he will have to reclaim, which may end up costing him as it may take a while for UC to inform him he is not eligible and close the claim.

Late1stTimeBuyer said:Interesting thread, I've a similar question around university students and benefits, apologies if it's different enough that a new thread would have been better.
Would the situation be the same if the student was interrupting their studies, have officially suspended their studies during their 3rd year with a view to taking a year out and restarting their 3rd year in September 2021? They would not be receiving student finance in the year out.
Your question is different to the OP so please start your own thread. You'll receive more help this way. Asking questions on other peoples threads causes a lot of confusion.
