Removal companies

Hi!

We are about to exchange contracts and hopefully agree a completion date. We've got 4 quotes from various removal companies, all of varying prices, from £676 to £515. Some people have just said go with the cheapest but I'm not sure if that is always the best option! The company that quotes £676 have been recommended by quite a lot of people, and seem very professional.  The £515 one, by 1 person, I'm sure they're fine, but I didn't think.. wow they're amazing! I'm not convinced how legit the reviews on their websites are either. As you can see I am a tad confused. (Man with a van isn't an option btw).

Any advice would be wonderful, thank you!

You haven't actually asked a question!  I'm going to assume you want us to decide between a cheaper removals company and a more expensive one.  With no other information!

Can't really do it without knowing the names of the two companies, doing some research on them, how far are you moving, from what sort of house to what other sort of house, do you have loads of stuff or not etc etc?

Then we'd all be in the same position as you are now. No idea!

Sorry to sound unhelpful but this decision is one only you can make.

The OP is talking about a difference of £161.  I wonder what their house move has cost in total?  I know this is a money-saving forum but there are limits.  The OP clearly has concerns over choosing the lowest quote and the higher quote appears to be well recommended so it seem to me that £161 will be buying a lot of peace of mind.  What value that has is for the OP to decide.

for that money difference I would go with the ones with many references tbh. Money saving is not everything.

Whoever you go with check that they are part of the association of house movers and see what their insurances cover, have all those who have quoted actually come and looked at what you have to give their price? (not sure if you got them pre lockdown or how they are currently operating) That variation of prices really isn't much so the coverage and detail is worth checking whichever way you go.
When I last moved I had 2 firms come look round and was going to get another firm to quote but they would only go off what you inputted into their very cookie cutter form on their website so didn't. I went with the firm who I had the best feeling about particularly in that initial meeting to discuss requirements, they were local but a variety of van sizes & in the end went above the call to get me in on move day & were also moving my sellers so could keep tabs between the crews during the day (& have subsequently moved several other people into the road)
    - Mortgage: 1st one down, 2nd also busted
    - Student Loan gone
Swagbucks, Mingle, GiffGaff, Prolific, Qmee & Quidco; thank you MSE every little bit helps
  • I didn’t realise my post was so confusing! We are moving 20 mins down the motorway.. had 3 quotes one was way above what we would be willing to pay.. so they’re out straight away. The first quote was £676 and the second was £515. First company quite professional but more expensive. They both came round and we told them what needs moving. My question is- should we go for the cheapest? Are they all pretty much the same in terms of the service they provide? The more expensive was a company called Swift, the other was express removals. (Both in Gloucester)
  • You should look for reviews on removal company sited that would be your best indicator I would say

Thought about renting a van for the day and doing it yourself? Place near me you can rent a large van for the day for £60 (£200 deposit refundable). This is what im doing when I move.

I paid £200 for two guys to come round, load the van and take it to my place 20 miles away. I went for them as they had a lot of positive reviews over various platforms and have since recommended them.

This was during lockdown and the lads were sweet, professional and got the job done very quick.

What's stopping you picking one who is highly recommended?
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.
  • Using the cheapest removal company is a gamble. Take the offer in the middle and ask them if they can match the cheapest or to give a small discount at least. If the day is not busy for them, most moving companies will always offer a discount to put you on their calendar. If the companies haven`t done on-site surveys, ask them to visit your place so you can get a sense if the company you want to use is legitimate and their representative looks professional and assuring. Using the cheapest company can be a high risk and more expensive at the end.
