As above - if the delivery date is more than a couple of days, you know the product is coming from overseas. I recently bought some garden cushions - the delivery date was 2-3 days longer than other items, but went ahead and ordered anyway, it turned out they were coming from Germany. They've since been lost in transit - and I'm now 2 weeks past their estimated delivery time, and have today agreed a full refund, as the parcel appears to have disappeared into the ether somewhere. The key to overseas deliveries is definitely the delivery dates.0

What about other countries like Bangladesh, most of Africa, and dozens more, how many are on your Ethical List, how many designer brands that know some of their products are manufactured in these countries unethically, on your list?
P.s @ Pinkshoes the big Chinese sellers have shipping warehouses all over Europe, USA, Canada etc, there are dozens in the UK. They import the stuff themselves into the countries they sell in so they can have have faster delivery times. They are more expensive to cover the customs and shipping charges to bring them here but they are Chinese based businesses.
Heres an example, this is a fake spray gun I was looking at, the real one is £350, it ships from London but look at the seller information.

Steveglw said:I think this is absolutely ridiculous that we the consumer have no way of finding out where it was made till it arrivesI think you will find you are very much in the minority; we live in a globalised world and you are almost asking for the impossible when hardly anyone cares anyway. What does "where it was made" mean? Where the entrepreneur came up with the idea for the product? Where the design team came up with the finished design? Where the raw goods to make the components came from? Where the components were made? Where the product was built from the components? Where the product was finished off in a particular colour? Where the "maker's" label was added? Where the product was retail packaged?Every one of those could happen in a different country and the raw goods and components could come from many different countries; I doubt many if any products on the market today are exclusively the origin of just one country...Every generation blames the one before...

Just because you find this important doesn't mean everybody does. Personally, I don't care if something is from China but I'd like to know if any clowns have been near items I want to purchase, as I hate them and don't like the idea of my new dress or whisk or torch having been near one. Should I write to my MP to get that on packaging?1 -
Steveglw said:Thanks to everyone for your comments. I have spoken to a trading standards officer in Glasgow who confirmed there is no legislation for any goods being sold (apart from food products) mandating them to state their country of manufacture or origin. They can only get involved for false information therefore misleading the public. I think this is absolutely ridiculous that we the consumer have no way of finding out where it was made till it arrives but even then there is no guarantee of a mention of country of origin.
This is not me being anti Chinese but I would like to have the option based on my own personal ethical reasons whether to buy the product or not.
Looks like I need to speak to my local MP and get the ball rolling as it looks like noone else is taking on that challenge... I'm a bit bored now and always like a challenge so wish me luck... 😂

I'm not surprised that several on this thread only care about price but for me, the option to avoid buying from oppressive, human rights abusing, anti-democratic regimes with no regard for the environment is increasingly important. It is not beyond the wit of man to define "country of origin". We have a big enough law industry, I'm sure they could come up with something!0 -

I suggest you do your research and see which companies are left especially om electronic goods, even if the item is produced in the EU for example a lot of the components will still come from these countries you don't want to deal with.

There is a Chrome plugin for this: "Cellar". Look in the Chrome Web Store. It displays a flag next to each product.I normally shop in Firefox so this works well, I use Chrome+Cellar to browse Amazon and then buy in Firefox. No reason to doubt the extension but never wise to do financial stuff online with extraneous plugins enabled.neilmcl said:So what did you use to type in this post today?Since 2020, no Samsung smartphones are made in China. Personally, agree with OP. Doesn't hurt to at least think about country of origin.0

You buy a car that says "Built in UK", do you think that every part of that car was sourced from the UK?Life in the slow lane0
