Unable to renew passport

Unable to renew passport due to both the UK and Ireland passport offices being closed. Neither can guarantee when a new passport would be sent out. What are my options? Surely there are loads of other people in the same situation. Any advice would be much appreciated.

It's not like you can travel at the moment.

Stick the forms etc in the post and join the queues

There isn’t a way around that I’m afraid, is there a particular reason you need e passport urgently?

Can't see anything about being closed,  just
"It is taking longer than usual to process applications because of coronavirus."

New User name as MSE gave me a number in my old one.

They are processing but turnaround will be slower, post application ASAP & make sure it's faultless!   Not sure if the on-line application may speed it up a bit, so you could 'phone & ask.  https://www.gov.uk/apply-renew-passport

A friend has just made a 30hr trek to get back from Spain - no idea if outbound  anywhere by any method is available but you're obviously wanting to get somewhere.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

I renewed mine about 7 weeks ago.
I filled in renewal form online.
took photo with mobile phone and uploaded it to the online application.
sent the online application and “Signed for”posted off my old passPort.
Within a few days received email stated received application
A few days later received email stating application approved and sent for Printing
A few days later received email stating New Passport being posted
New Passport Received less than 2 weeks after I applied for it

  • A straight forward renewal should be no problem either online or with a paper application from a post office.  May take slightly longer than normal but not necessarily, if applications are lower.    If  there are complications such as you have lost your passport (possibly more than once) or they require a face to face interview for whatever reasons this will take much longer.   Have you actually put in an application decky?

Do an online renewal if you can. I've always found it to be a lot quicker than they predict anyway.
  • I’ve just sent off my passport renewal as we have a holiday booked for the end of Sept, hoping it will go ahead but who knows? But if it does I obviously need a passport! I completed an online renewal on Friday, all very easy and it arrived at their office today. I phoned the actual passport office and spoke to someone, whilst he said he couldn’t give any guarantees he said he didn’t think it would be an issue getting it back in time for my holiday (fingers crossed!)

Have you sent off your old passport Mrsmoneypenny?   A straight forward renewal takes next to no time.  Problems arise when people have lost their passport or defaced them.   Passport won't commit to how long it will take but am sure if you have done everything correctly and the photo is up to spec it will be issued fairly quickly.
  • Yes that’s right sent my old one off one thing is I have had to change my name due to getting married (actually got married 8yrs ago!! But wanted to use up my old passport) but I sent off my marriage certificate so fingers crossed it will be ok? Whether the holiday goes ahead is another matter completely.....
