Sorry OP you do get some rubbish on this forum.

Garages don't have the knowledge so they just put anything in. You can't prove what has been put in so they will tell you anything.
    Yes you do. Continual drivel.

Well it took 12 useless posts before I came along with the correct information. Garage mechanics are unlikely to put the correct oil in. The OP is trying to get them to put the correct oil in with limited success. The garages aren't interested. It's not their car. If the car is damaged they won't be paying. The only thing with a 10 year old car is you've no idea what has been used previously. It's not likely to have been correct.

    Yet more continuation of drivel

I think the OP has worked out by now that it's not easy to work out what oil is needed and the garage want to put the wrong oil in. It's not rocket science to extrapolate that if it's 10 years old there is a good chance it has previously had the wrong oil in. Whether any damage has resulted is hard to say.

    Of course it is.

If you have the owner's handbook, it's in there.
If you don't, there's many specialist oil vendor websites that will tell you.

Garages are not stupid. They have drums of their default oils, sure - an increasing number of them - but if something comes in that needs specific, they will get it on the next van from the factor with a single phone call.

The wrong oil is far more likely to be used by Joe Average doing a DIY change who doesn't understand the difference, and has 5l of 20w50 mineral lurking around because he's always used it and doesn't see why there's any need to change.

So when you drop your car off for a service they ask you to bring your owner's handbook so they can work out which oil you need? With a garage you have to be thankful if they actually change the oil. Garages know that it's impossible realistically to prove what oil was used so they know that they can tell you anything. I was going to take my PD car to garages for services until I read of the owner's experiences. Why put all that effort into trying to get a garage to use the right oil? Just do it yourself and know the job's been done properly. And it's money saving too which is what this site is all about.

If people with PD engines had gone to garages and the garages had said "that's got a PD engine it needs special oil" then the people would have gone on the fora and said "I have got a PD engine. It's fine. The garages know all about the special oil". However the opposite happened. People were reporting all sorts of problems and dishonesty. You could be very close to 100% sure that if you took it to a garage they would not put suitable oil in it.

Based on nothing but your paranoia and mindless spurious drivel.
