Thanks everyone,  I will download the BBc sounds app and go from there.
But the sounds app isnt real time fm radio like you were asking about. Its basically a recording of something in a past tense already. So news bulletins will be old news already.
    Try this https://www.cnet.com/google-amp/news/unlock-the-secret-fm-tuner-in-your-android-phone/
It has catchup of past programs but also offers traditional 'linear' radio too for the normal BBC radio channels
But if you are going to use 'data' rather that radio signals, then there are more flexible options like TuneIN

I like tunein,  you can get a wide range of choices from around the world which covers all styles of music and talk shows.

I like it too, but the other day, I searched for BBC R 2 and found what I thought was the correct station. The (purple and green) logo says 'BBC Radio Two 88-91FM', but the sound certainly wasn't. It was a sort of 60's oldies station. 🤷‍♂️called 'Solid Gold Gem (?) AM!
A quick search on Tune In doesn't seem to give any of the BBC radio stations!

Strange, my recommendation of TuneIN was based on my experience of using it via my Sonos speaker and that provides access to Radio 2 , Radio 4, Radio 4 Extra and a couple of others - but  as others say going via the web site I can't find those stations or it says they are unavailable

The BBC were unable to snoop on you using TuneIN so removed themselves from their platform

Even though they can't snoop on me -  I can still search for and play a large number of B B C radio channels via the Sonos  via the TuneIN source

I've signed the Petition, even though I don't actually seem to be affected by whatever changes the BBC made
Maybe its because the link to TuneIn was set up prior to those changes - or because there is no reference to Sonos in the BBC affected list

All very interesting but as I said in my original post I do not have a mobile signal and no DAB up here in North Lincolnshire when I am out walking, plus my 'new' phone is an Apple SE, not the new one, the one with 6s insides.
So I have downloaded a couple of things from BBC Player but many things do not seem to be available for downloads.  Still I have enough downloaded for now.
