It gets worse. He's just texted me to say he's an hour away, but I haven't transferred enough money! I've transferred the extra agreed amount minus the deposit. He says that's nothing to do with him. But I have an invoice for the deposit clearly showing amount still owing after deposit paid. I've paid again otherwise goodness knows where he'll drop it. Very sour experience.

The consumer issue here is you are being ripped off.

This man is a crook. I doubt he's even going to bother delivering the tank, it's going to get flytipped somewhere along the way. In your shoes I'd write off what I've paid and cancel the service.

I’ve used Shipley quite a lot but i always pay them on delivery. If they have the money in advance you have no options when it goes wrong. They usually offer a cash on delivery option

Well it arrived safely. Like I said I couldn't be there, but had arranged for 4 builder friends to be there to offload (143 kg). I hadn't mentioned any troubles to my wife, she'd made tea and sandwiches for them & him. But by the time builders had come back to front of house after dropping it off, he was driving off.

I haven't measured it to be honest, I can say, it would be very difficult to do accurately as both ends are concave shape, with the widest part about 1 metre in the up from ground. But I have absolutely no doubt the manufacturer's measurements are correct. Even if I could, it's too late now and noway would I be able to get a word in to try and convince him.

I have left truthful bad review on Shiply for him, I can see mainly good ones, so unsure if I'm unlucky, or there are fake reviews there. There are also 1 star reviews (no 0 possible), I've contacted Shiply CS, even just to try and get my deposit back, but I'm not holding my breath.

Time to put it behind me and move on, Thanks all for your interest.

So you don't know for certain whether the dimensions you gave him were correct, but still left a bad review for him even though he still managed to deliver the item (despite his earlier protestations)?

I think the least you should have done was measure the item, even if he was long gone.

Don't forget, I doubt many delivery men would accept tea and sandwiches during the Pandemic so I don't think he was being rude by driving off..

Don't forget also that delivery services during the Crisis have been overwhelmed and fraught with danger of infection. Remember that the government advice is to only deliver to the front door and step away, if it took 4 men to load and unload the item then this would not be possible.

In your situation, I'd cut him some slack as he may well have been on the receiving end of a lot of verbal abuse in the past few weeks.
I do accept he might also just be peeved that he couldn't transport other items he planned to at the same time. If that is indeed the case rather than a dimension error then you have fair point.
