New Car Not Ordered by Car Dealer - 3 months Delay
We ordered a new car on March 21st 2020 with an estimated delivery timeline of 10-12 weeks. In recent weeks, we contacted the dealership who advised an approximate delivery date of 2 June having tracked the car on their systems recognising that it may flex by a few days in the current situation. We have now been informed that the car was not in fact ordered back in March and that if we want the specification we originally requested it would take a further 3 months. As an alternative, the dealer have offered a lower specification model which is immediately available. Reassured by the expected delivery dates, we have agreed to transfer our existing car to our daughter who doesn’t live with us and needs the car for work. I’d welcome thoughts on what we can reasonably expect from the dealer. We have asked for a courtesy car for 3 months pending delivery of the car we ordered and this has been refused. I feel like we are being forced into accepting a lesser model as a result of a massive customer service failure by the dealer. All thoughts welcome particularly on where we stand legally. Thanks in advance.

The situation is, If you want a new car you will have to wait, if you want a lesser model you can have it now.
You need to decide what you want and then approach the dealer with an idea of what you want as compensation. As a minimum check what a broker would get you the car for.
If they refuse you can cancel, but this doesn't get you a car and you will have to start the buying process again and get no dealer offer.0 -
You want a free car for three months, because the order didn't go through before lockdown...?
You are having a giraffe.
Even if it had been ordered in March, all the factories worldwide have been closed for months, so the June delivery date was never going to happen.
You have a choice. The car you want, more or less when it would have actually been delivered anyway. Or a car to a different spec, now.1 -

The garage have constantly committed to a delivery date in early June and we have made other decisions on the back of this. If they had not committed to the date and had advised that the car had not been ordered at all I would be more understanding. They have pulled the rug from under us at the last minute. Oh and the Turkish factory which makes this model has been open since April. Perhaps RTFQ next time and do some research before offering I’ll thought through opinions.1 -

No, they gave you the manufacturer's estimated delivery date. That will have gone out of the window since March, for fairly obvious reasons.Oh and the Turkish factory which makes this model has been open since April.
Ah, the drip-drip of pertinent information.
But, of course, dealers have not been open. This dealer has not been open. They didn't get the order in and confirmed before they locked down. Bad dealer, no biscuit. Now they're back to work, they can do. But - obvs - it'll be delayed.
Do you want to wait or not? Stamping your foot won't get your preferred spec of car built any quicker. I'm presuming you don't want your deposit refunded and the order cancelled completely. So... what do you want? Some kind of grovelling apology and a bunch of flowers?

You have not seen any of the correspondence we have had from the dealership during lockdown so you are not in a position to confirm what they committed to or the basis on which they did that. Neither do you know the working arrangements of the dealership who have had staff working at home who have been liaising with us. We can only agree on one thing - bad dealer - which they themselves admit and we are exploring options with them.0 -
Ah, the drip-drip of pertinent information...
So - I repeat - WHAT DO YOU WANT?0 -
What "options" are there? You either want the ca or you don't. If you want it then you either have to wait for them or order it from somewhere else. If you don't then cancel it and yet your deposit back.
They aren't going to give you a free car for three months because of some vague arrangement you made with a family member.0 -
