I've downloaded the Windows 10 iOS file but Windows xp can't find a program to open it so I am using Winzip to extract the files to my USB hard drive.

Remember that the Installation creation tool will (probably) wipe and format the drive as it needs to make it a bootable disk ... so don't use one that has data on it that you need to keep.
Edited that for you (in my experience)

You can't just load it using winzip and copying it won't boot , you need rufus the last version for XP was 2-18.exe here https://rufus.ie/downloads/ scroll down then use it to put the iso on the USB

Not an issue, but you ran somewhat ahead of yourself.

First of all, do you have  the DVD±RW and CD-RW Super Multi Double-Layer Combo Drive or the DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive?

If the former, you can simply create  DVD installation media. If the latter, you will need; https://github.com/pbatard/rufus/releases/download/v2.18/rufus-2.18.exe or https://github.com/pbatard/rufus/releases/download/v2.18/rufus-2.18p.exe and a USB Flash/Thumb drive(not your external HDD as it will erase everything on it) of at least 4 GB, not 8 GB, as the 32 bit media is around 3.3 GB.

Don't jump ahead without checking here first. Step by step.  ;)
Supply the answers and wait for instructions.

When it comes to the installation, you'll need to make some specific choices, as well as afterwards going into Settings after the install to turn off some of the things you don't need.
I recommend installing Windows 10 32 bit Pro and not Home. You can buy a key for a couple of squid via eBay.

    But, step by step.

Please bear in mind that the first inkling that this was a 32bit machine was the XP reference. (Unless someone could have determined that from the Compaq Presario comment). The 64bit version of W10 needs a 8GB stick/install media.

Thanks, I decided to use the external hard drive in the end as it was a surplus one anyway.
The installation of Windows10 pro 32 bit went fine but the setup is painfully slow and my laptop is really struggling to cope. Keep getting the error message "Something went wrong OOBEKEYBOARD" with the option to skip or try again.
