How much do you spend in retirement ?

Although I baulk at the thought of paying for business class out of my own pocket, there are people who still want it and they come to MSE to find out the cheapest way of doing it.ย
This comes up a lot on HotukDeals, a lease car is posted and someone will say "leasing is a waste of money, you can buy a 10 year old Fiat Panda for ยฃ500". Completely missing the point, what they should really be trying to do is to find a better deal on the same car and post it.

We sat in row 13 and the guy behind said "you're brave, I would never sit in Row 13"
I just said that if my row was going down, that there was a pretty good chance his was as well.

I think we can all agree that being MSE is about value for money...not how much you spend (or not).
As we all differ in what we deem to be good "value", then we will never agree. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)4 -

Completely missing the point, what they should really be trying to do is to find a better deal on the same car and post it.There've been loads of threads on the travel board about BC/first class travel, but they tend to be of two types, one where people ask about, or report on, ways of saving money travelling BC/FC; and a second type where people ask "is it worth it".So for the first type it's as you describe above, it's not a discussion about whether the desired product is worth the money, it's a discussion about MSE ways to get the desired product, perfectly valid MSE discussion. But the second type is exactly Fred's point, a discussion about whether the product itself is worth it.I've only ever got involved with the second type, but I've noticed a tendancy there too for polarisation and defensiveness where there really is no need. Discussing the value for money of a product or a class of product is valid MSE discussion too, and I think this sub-thread discussion started with disagreement between someone and their spouse as to whether BC was worth it (money or hassle). Here's an example from the travel board, as you can see it got a bit heatedย

I have noticed that there are two issues that set off repeated discussions in this forum: business class flying and buying a new car.ย I doubt there is much new to say on either.
