Why not add the number to your contacts list and then block that contact ??

It just shows as private number and no other detail

Is this the kind of situation where a piercing whistle would be useful? Once you realise it's the eejits, let rip with something unpleasant.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I have now found 'Block Anonymous Numbers'. It was harder to find than the normal 'call block' which I have used before for telemarketing calls. Im going to put up with it for a few more nights because of the hospital calling but Im letting the 'Private number' go to voicemail. So far tonight, in the last hour its happened twice and when Ive listened to the voicemails one was someone putting on a 'posh' voice saying 'Madam the thing you found is mine, I demand its return' and the other was like a rasping voice from a horror film which just said 'F+++ off and die'. Nice. Hopefully they will find something new to do next week. All this through trying to do a good turn.

I don't know if you can block calls where you don't know the number.  If they are seriously annoying you, I find that the top part of a recorder (devil's instrument) blown forcefully into the microphone puts cold callers off.  Or a referee's whistle.

You might need to speak to the police about this as harassment - they may have ideas but even just giving you a crime number may make the phone company more willing to act.

This does not work it will not come through any louder than someone talking.

Your phone provider cannot help with this, because they do not know who is calling either.

I'd say the only way is to ignore the nuisance callers. Don't say anything ( not even hello) and just quietly put the phone down. If they fail to get a reaction enough times they will give up.

Alternatively answer the phone like this, and don't hang up (there is potentially fun in constantly redialling as you actively hanging up is a reaction) - just leave the phone in another room with the door shut and the volume turned down. I imagine they'll get bored once they realise they're shouting into nothing.

I'd also deactivate your voicemail, so they can't leave messages - I know that others also won't be able to leave messages, but genuine callers will ring back.

One thing you could try is see if a friend with a very different voice could answer it as "PC Smith", i know it sounds ridiculous but they may just think it's not worth risking their phones is police are involved
