Made a mistake when purchasing a Lebara SIM, do I have to activate?

My old Vodafone contract recently expired and since I like my phone I wanted a sim only deal.
Unfortunatly as Vodafone are unable to remotely match any of the deals that can be found via MSE I opted to cancel and go for the Lebara 8GB for £8 deal instead. I regretably didn't look directly on their site as I figured the MSE deals would be the best.
Well, a little later I went to look on their site and they offered 6GB for £6, a more appropriate deal for me. I spoke with their Live chat rep about switching and they said I had to wait for the new sim to arrive before I can cancel.
Anyway, I now have the sim and after speaking to another (kinda rude) live chat rep (after a far too long wait) they told me that I have to activate it in order to cancel the contract and start again.
Is this true? Would activating the sim not cause the contract to start? Or could I just not activate the sim and not pay them anything? After the service I got from their rep I'm not sure I even want to use them at this point so can I get out of this?
Thanks!

No, you can cancel your Lebara contract before activating the sim - i did this myself over live chat recently after a change of heart. Chat to them again.
Btw you can get decent Vodafone sim only deals on their 'basic' plan - doesn't include roaming overseas or wifi calling. Eg 8 Gb for £8/m. Go via simsherpa.com or uswitch.com to see VF's basic plans.2 -
Thanks, it did seem odd that they were so eager for me to activate the sim and it didn't really seem logical that I would have to activate it in order to cancel.Anyway finally managed to talk to someone (their chat is horrifically slow) and managed to cancel it. Now to do the PAYG sim card dance to become a new Vodafone customer again0

You could look at VOXI, Voda's love child, SIM only monthly contract
