Don't shop in tesco so can't comment but our local asda has the ss open, and a couple of the tills next to them, but if there are no customers waiting the staff go and work on the aisles facing and come over when you ask or hover around looking lost!!!!

There is always a member of checkout staff to supervise the self serve tills through the night. I know as that is my job 2 nights a week. I have other tasks to do when it is quiet but am always around when needed. I'm new to it though and hoping that during the last run up to Christmas there will be extra staff on at night and proper tills open for large shops.

I think the OP was unlucky with queues at that time of night as generally the self serves can cope very easily with the amount of customers through the night.

To answer a couple of questions asked - the Tesco I'm talking about is huge! From the local dual carriageway it looks like Tesco International Airport!

This closing of 'real people' tills after 11pm must be recent because I've been in after midnight in the past and been served by a person. You wouldn't think that near Xmas was a good time to start cutting back would you? Especially since Tesco claim they have not been affected by the recent down turn in retail sales!

Ironically there were 3 members of staff supervising the self service checkouts. WHY? Why not put one of them on a real till?

I love those self service tills. I always try and use those for my shopping if I can but they do go wrong sometimes. Once I paid with my debit card and it didn't give a receipt and the supervisor couldnt tell if it had worked or not so she said I should just take the items and if it doesn't come out of my bank call it a freebie. It didn't come out of my bank so that was £43 of free shopping there.

We don't have any self service tills in our Tesco, there's always say... 5 tills open which increases/decreases seeing how busy it is.

Asda's we do have self service tills - approx 4 I think it is, but there's always at least 2 tills open which increases again depending how busy it is.
