Does your local Tesco only have self-service tills after 11pm?

Options
Last Saturday on the way home from the flicks I decided I needed a few bits and bobs from Tesco.

Result. 10 mins wandering around with my basket choosing carefully. Went to checkouts to find out there were none actually manned by staff just the self service ones and huge (for that time of night 5 or 6 people at each one) queues!

What the f..........?

Apparently after 11pm that's all there is - so when you pop in for a quick shopping trip you end up waiting for ages!

I had some hassles (documented elsewhere on here at the time) with the self service till when it didn't give out a receipt which meant having to put shopping through again because I was told to by a muppet who was supposed to be helping people, then checking bank balance and finding we'd been charged twice then having to go back to store in person and wait for 45 minutes while they checked the transaction to check we weren't trying to defraud them:mad:

Consequently I no longer use Tesco self service tills. So I just left the full basket there and took the only real essential which was 2 tins of dog food and paid with a £1.00 coin. That way if I don't get a receipt it doesn't matter at all.

But I'm curious - is that an across the board Tesco night-time policy or just our wierd local store?

Thanks guys,

HD
Don't grow up. Its a trap!

Peace, love and labradors!

Is yours a small tesco? Ours AFAIK always has atleast 2 staff on tills and we have about 8 self serve tills. And ours is a pretty big Tesco.

Ours (an Extra store) has changed policy a few times ...

First of all, the SS tills were closed at 11pm.

    Then, it was SS only.

Now, they have removed all the SS tills! x

Ours has people on the till through the night, but it's one of the 24 hour ones. Thats if you can do your shopping with all the isles blocked by staff restocking!

Ours only has SS tills but I don't see the problem - where else can you do your weekly shop at 3 in the morning?!!

They probably only have self service tills after 11 as they dont have checkout staff who work past 11

I've never used a self-service till, nor seen one used.
This reads to me as a warning - if I ever go into Tesco at some odd hour I will check first that there's real people at the till.

I doubt I'd manage to use a self-service till without everything going tits up
Might be tempted to just walk out of the store with the goods, on the logical basis "I will be stopped and they can tell me how much the goods cost" :)
