end of contract looming in about 3 weeks - do I still need to give 1 month notice?

Options
Hi... my contract with BT is ending "next month" I believe.  I've not got a date anywhere, I simply know the date the engineer visited (and the service wasn't provided until a day or 2 later) in mid December 2018, and I'm on a 18 month contract.  I signed in today and a "your contract something or others soon" message flashed and disappeared.
I don't use their tv service and have watched only a few matches on bt sport so am not really interested in continuing with the tv/sport package which just about doubles the price after this contract ends.  I'd prefer a sky sports package but it's too expensive, and possibly a nowTV pass might work out cheaper with a new internet service.  Would like some speed again, (streamers, gamers, heavy internet use in the house) and Virgin are the only ones offering more than 30mb here so they are my only choice - hence not really interested in haggling with BT as they can't offer what I want. Not that I didn't appreciate bt sport & internet for about £35 a month - doubt I can get sky sports & internet for anything close to that?

Does anyone know if I can phone now and cancel to finish on my contract end date, or if I'd still need to give one full month's notice? If I'm able to cancel earlier, I don't want them telling me porkies and making me stay and pay a bit longer.  (my bad for not being on top of this though)

Frustratingly cityfibre was being installed in our area just before lockdown (they're a couple of streets away), and it's possible this would offer more options if it had been done already, so maybe staying with BT without the sports package and no new contract is also an option, but I'd guess that without a new contract, they'll ramp up the broadband/phone price anyway... /sigh
Thanks :)

Only call to cancel if you are not migrating to another provider , if you are switching to another Openreach based provider you contact them and they deal with serving your notice to BT.
If you use a company that doesn’t use Openreach ( Virgin , Cityfibre etc ) , and you are not bothered about the phone number, you need to call and give give 30 days notice, if you migrate to another OR provider the switch takes place 10-14 days after you call them

OP VM do not use the BT Open Reach infrastructure totally seperate cabling .
If you have VM in the street then just give your notice to BT . You may pay an extra month .
Does not matter if BT switch Off after VM starts .

If you don't negotiate then you don't get a decent price .
No new contract with BT is silly as you will pay top price  . But it is a rolling 30 day contract that only requires 30 days notice .

Me i would sort out what actual sport i wanted first then find a deal .

You have to give one month's notice from the date your minimum term ends. However, only do this if you decide to go with Virgin because they  have an entirely separate network requiring a new installation. If you decide on any other provider do as "iniltous" says above and let your new provider handle it.

Do be aware that a new installation from any provider may be problematical at present...

thanks folks.  we switched from virgin, so we do have that installed at the house already fortunately.  Still haven't quite made my mind up what I want after next month, but at least I know where I stand :)

  • Hi I am coming to the end of my contract with Virginmedia at the moment paying £57 per month for 100mbps broadband(though it’s probably less than that in reality) free anytime calls and mix tv which is roughly Freeview with odd extra channels. Increasing to £62 in June then £67 in January 2021. Happy enough but would like to spend less. Any suggestions?
