    Can OP  record Netflix ?
OP has Virgin connection  box  so worth asking Virgin Mobile the cost before buying a recorder box .( but OP you say you don't want expensive ?? virgin / sky etc  .
Freeview does not work well that could be just a connection/ aerial .

Doesn't your Smart TV have a built-in recording function? My LG TV has; https://eguide.lgappstv.com/manual/gb/12017.html

The point of Netflix and other providers is you dont record them as there always there sitting and waiting for you to return.
You of course will need good broadband and pay Netflix there monthly fee.

IF the TV is smart enough to have Netflix built in, then there's a decent chance it's got a USB socket with ability to record programmes. OP, if you can tell us the make & model of the TV then we can check this. Or just look for a USB socket & plug a USB stick or external hard drive into it, see if a Record function magically becomes available on the TV. Of course you can only record programs that you can actually receive, so if the reception is poor then it won't do a good job. But of course if you can get onto the BBC iPlayer app and itv, Channel 4 and Channel 5 apps on the TV then most shows are available on catch-up so maybe you don't need to record anything.
