Thermal Expansion of flat roof help

Bear with me here folks....
My elderly mother lives in a large flat roof, self-contained, annex attached to the back of my house on a southerly aspect.
As the temperature changes there is banging noises from the roof. I assume it is thermal expansion of the roofing timbers, it is worst in the evenings as the temperature drops. Is there anything we can do?
It is driving her mad, it doesn't help her parkinsons or anxiety (she is recently widowed).

I get quite a bit of noise from guttering as it heats up and cools down again - Might be worth looking at that first before trying to do anything about the roof.If it is the roof causing the noise, it isn't going to be easy to fix - One possible solution would be to remove the fascia boards from the end where the roof timbers sit on the wall. Jack up the roof slightly and insert some thin sheets of ptfe between the timbers & wall plate. But the timbers may well be nailed to the wall plate and have steel strapping to secure them. There is also a very good chance that you'll crack the plaster internally. Her courage will change the world.
Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.0
