Tui Holiday Cancel /Reschedule

As a family of 5 we are due to fly to Greece in August with First Choice (TUI). Ideally, we would like to rebook to travel next year instead but the same holiday (hotel, dates etc) are £2k more expensive. We have 2 days left to cancel before we hit 70 days prior to departure and therefore only lose our deposit however
1 - no deposit was paid. We went straight into equal DD instalment payments which are £400 Less than the amount Tui say we will lose as a deposit.  There are no details in the letter of Confirmation with my booking to state what the true deposit should have been?
2 - if we rebook for 2021 for a completely different holiday and Tui refund the balance, where do we stand in terms of the new holiday if we needed to cancel that? What would they class as the deposit as it would be paid in full from the outset?
3 - Our original booking was to fly with Norweigen Airlines yet on checking my booking online, our flight is now due to be with Tui. Can we amend a booking that was originally made to fly with a 3rd party airline?
Any help gratefully received. Many thanks.

I can't answer 1 or 2, but the tour operator has a contract with you to get you to and from the required destination,  there is nothing in that contract to state the airline to be used, if that is the question.  As it's a TUI package,  I wouldn't expect the airline being used to have any effect on the ability to amend the booking.

  • Ah - sorry I forgot to include. T&cs suggest that if you booked to use a 3rd party airline , any amendment to the booking should utilise the same airline. We initially booked and the airline was Norweigen. This has since been amended to a TUI flight by tui themselves with no reference to us.

Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong - but I think it's standard TUI policy to pursue full deposit applicable if the customer defaults.
  • We certainly haven't defaulted. Holiday in August 2020 paid in full. Trying to work out what we could lose if we changed holiday to 2021 and then cancelled it. Equally, as above - no actual deposit paid as only equal monthly installments. I can't find any info re what the deposit should have been should be choose to cancel now.

Our deposit to Greece was £200 per person.
We paid £50 each as a low deposit then a further £300 a month later to make up the full deposit.

TUI are allowed to do this. The only obligation is to let you know at some point.  There is no refund right based purely on the change of carrier.

TUI seem to have a variable deposit scheme the amount of the deposit paid based on different factors. This could be dependant on the holiday type or if they are running a low-deposit type offer at time of booking.  They indicate that they tell you the deposit at time of booking.

It it sounds like you may have taken up the opportunity of using their Direct Debit scheme and as such TUI actually say in the brochure that the it is a £0 deposit.  If nothing mentioned to the contrary when booking or on your confirmation paperwork it may well be the case that this is the promotional offer used.

Cancellation terms can be found on their website, in their brochure and I think on the booking confirmation paperwork.

Options to move your pre 31.08.20 holiday to later can be found here -

One of our flights this year was on Norwegian. I've now re-booked for 2021 and both are Norwegian. I think this is a TUI decision not a "3rd party airline" where I had booked the hotel accommodation with them but the flight with someone else. My worry is that Norwegian were looking a bit dodgy some months ago and recent events are unlikely to have improved this.

Those were/are charter flights operated by Norwegian for TUI Travel.  The flights carried a BY flight prefix (the old Britannia one).  Of course by next year TUI may well be able to just keep all their flying in-house and operated by TUI Airways.

    Hi Folks
We are due to travel to Turkey on 31st August and we are entitled to the free change of date.  However, I wondered about cancelling altogether and seeing what we might lose financially.  When I looked at Ts and Cs it says that if you cancel with more than 70 days notice (its 98 till we travel) then you lose the deposit and pay a termination fee.  I paid a low deposit of £100 back in June of last year so expected to maybe lose £200 altogether...... not so as I discovered when I clicked on cancel my holiday in the manage booking section, it said I would need to pay £400!  What I cannot find under the Ts and Cs is any mention of the cost of the termination fee only that its a proportion of the holiday, so does anyone know what this might be as I think £400 is a bit steep!!!
