More than one thread here about each of those firms you cite would seem to indicate otherwise due to the Pandemic. Of course where you shop is entirely up to you,  but personally I'd not let how a particular retailer coped during the Covid Crisis be the deciding factor.
Ordering non-essential items for delivery during the Lockdown was always going to be hit-and-miss. Your experience is not unique across the whole gamut of DIY retailers.
I don't recall mentioning in my post whether my order contained essential items or not.

My definition of "essential" may be different to yours.
Personally, I don't believe Homebase (or any other DIY retailer) sells anything at all which is "essential".

Used Homebase for home delivery of three items, order placed on the 24/03/2020 two arrived within two weeks still waiting for the third, no response from them despite numerous emails.
Finally got an email from them today, sorry that part of order delayed will contact their supplier and cancel order and then refund for the missing item, only taken them over two months to respond since the order was placed, now waiting to see how long the refund will take.

DIY stores hold a host of essential items.  We had a split/burst pipe and with local plumbing stores closed we managed to source the necessary part from a big chain DIY store.

Obviously the government decided that DIY  type  stores should remain open, but they have roundly failed to provide even a modicum of normal service. If you had a burst pipe emergency in the early days of the Lockdown you would have had to purchase through the Click'n'Collect service which took days to fulfil rather than hours. Not ideal if you had a pipe to repair immediately..

I'm guessing you purchased the part you needed after they recently re-opened their doors? If so, you were fortunate indeed to find the item in stock..

The criticism of one DIY retailer on this thread can equally be applied across the whole DIY retail sector (and has been on numerous different threads)

My point was you declared no DIY store holds any essential item.

For me it wasn't just essential but urgent.

Why guess when it was, or surmise.  Because both are wrong.  It was in the 'early days' and it was a chain which quickly adapted to have C&C outside their premises in the forecourt.   Had I waited until recently I would either have no water (having turned it off) or I would have several holiday cottages flooded.

I haven't criticised any of the DIY sector (that I know of) but my point was purely and simply to refute your claim.

I did quite clearly state that it was my own opinion (not 'claim') that DIY chains don't sell "essential" items.
I did get that you disagreed, but If you were able to purchase and collect your essential plumbing item in the early days of Lockdown you were indeed fortunate.
This thread is about the failure of one individual chain to supply an item to a customer. It is again my opinion that no DIY retailer has provided even a modicum of normal service recently...
