Getting in touch with EON

Odd, corona related situation, but stay with me!

began tenancy in new place early March. Spent lockdown in previous town with family as repairs needed doing on house.
since then I have been trying to contact eon to let them know I’m a new customer and will need to give them a reading for my bill.
I’m due to go home next week as all repairs now done, and am afraid of threatening letters.

Each time I try to telephone them I am asked for an account number. Without which I cannot proceed on the call.
Of course I dont have one as have not had chance to arrange my account.
i am even asked for this when I request the ‘thinking of joining us’ option. I mean, who has an account number when signing up???

there is no way in whatsoever.

any advice, if so, thank you!

Cant you just mash the 0 button and it eventually puts you in a queue to speak to someone?
  • Will try tomorrow!
i did something similar in a panic to contact Santander recently. Hit the hash button after eleventy million attempts and finally found a person.

they do make it difficult to take my money 😁

Oh and it may be an automated EON meter reading number you are trying to ring, just a hunch.

Google their main customer service number just in case its different.
  • Thanks bladders, I did dot hat.
was given a bunch of options, after the covid statement.
One was queries regarding bill, other was thinking of joining us, and last was problems regarding key meter, etc.

i went through all three and got asked for account number with no further option.

  • I called the 0345 052 0000 number.

Sorry. I would say nothing to do with corona virus, support and help?

Better posting in the ENERGY forum where you will get more advice, and I believe eon have a rep there??

  • Ah, thanks!
  • Think I mention this as I used to be able to contact them easily. I presumed it was a recent issue.
there are glitches on the line too, sometimes I pressed an option and it went silly repeating an unrelated issue.
wondered if it was a corona related melt down.😁

If you have access to the meter, take a time stamped pic of it. Make sure you capture their unique serial numbers. Then call and give them these serial numbers as they will match to the property as opposed to the account. They may cite data protection as the serial number can be used to identify someone else's data but make a note of when you called and the information passed over.

Currently you are on a "deemed" contract so you are an EON customer even if you do not have an account as yet. Also there are OFGEM rules about how to estimate use called typical domestic consumption values. The agency that rented you the property are also likely to have taken readings when the last tenant left and are likely to have passed them over to EON.

    https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/gas/retail-market/monitoring-data-and-statistics/typical-domestic-consumption-values

So the issue is a simple one of administrative delays and you should try to estimate using the rules above as to how much you may owe and put that money aside.

    • "Free parking" doesn't mean free of rules. Check the rules and if you don't like them, go elsewhere
