Given notice on furlough...

The company is a huge thriving well known firm that is planning on re opening in June. So they aren’t struggling for business (money) etc.I just can’t help but feel it’s a really !!!!!! move from them. Obviously I knew I was only temporary but before all this there was talk of there being no end date in sight. Also given the current circumstances it’s not going to be the easiest of things to find another job considering almost everything is closed. There was no top up from them either so it was only the 80% from the government I was receiving and with regards to holidays I’ve already used my allowance up earlier on in the year. It’s not like I would have been entitled to much more for the sake of another 2 months on furlough.0

Just because they're a huge well known company it doens't mean they aren't struggling. I would have said alot are struggling during this pandemic. My Son in law works for a well known company and they were topping up the extra 20% of their furlough for the first couple of weeks. This has now stopped and he just receives the 80% furlough which leaves him £350 per month worse off. Employers can't be forced to pay the extra 20% and they can't be forced to keep on you on, if there's no work.Look at claiming Universal Credit, providing you don't have savings/capital of more than £16,000. Use a benefits calculator to check entitlement. A claim for UC will end any tax credits you may already be claiming. Also be aware that the best time to claim UC will be after you've received your last pay from your employer, otherwise earnings received during your UC assessment period will reduce the amount of UC you're entitled to.1

Was always the harsh reality. There was never any hope of a quick fix to the disease.spiro said:I think there will be lots more of this now the government have outlined a roadmap for the decrease in furlough payments.

I know for a fact they aren’t struggling as they regularly keep in touch with us and have told us their online sales alone have met forecast and way beyond for the entire company since we went into lockdown. There was never no talk of topping the 80% with 20% from them which no one even questioned or even expected.0

Having sat on the inside for many years. Few employees actually know the real financial position of their company. Nor it's future prospects. The position can turn very quickly and savagely even in the good times.MrsO13 said:The company is a huge thriving well known firm that is planning on re opening in June. This is not really a question of whether or not they are struggling as you are not being made redundant. You had a temporary contract and it is coming to and end or not being renewed. Are you that surprised that a temporary contract is not permanent?
Can you ask then whether they can keep you on furlough until the end of July and take the 80% and "it won't cost the employer anything"?
I know you don't want to name the business, but what industry are they in and what role did you do? For example, if it is retail and they are doing so well with on-line sales, maybe they will do less retail and more online as their 'new normal' business plan and therefore won't need the same people back in the future.0 -
In actual fact they have been open to saying they haven’t even needed to use the furlough scheme but will still go ahead and claim it. Looks like I have just seen the true colours of the lovely company I thought I worked for.0

Actions speak louder than words. Confidence amongst those remain isn't going to be high.

A little while ago, I think it was Simon Jacks on the BBC, said about furlough, that people were already effectively redundant...they just didn't know it yet!
Sadly, it seems that in many cases this will prove to be true. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)1 -
Companies can no longer afford to carry passengers. If they can't find work for you or your work can be absorbed by other employees, then you are no longer neededIf you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
