Crack on the wall

Options
Hi,
my kitchen wall had a crack on it, a shape of a door frame, fixed it two years ago using just a normal filler on it, the crack is back again, just found out it used to be a door  before, I scraped where the crack is appearing, found stud timber with a 1-2 mm gape with the brick wall, can anybody advise on how I can fix it please as I don’t want to be fixing it every two years, I was thinking about using a decorator caulk to cover the gap between the wood and the brick wall then use filler.
please advise.

many  thanks

  • Would an expanding foam filler do the job?

Thanks for your reply, I will try the expanding foam and see how it goes.

Do you mean that the doorway in a brick wall was blocked up using a stud wall?   If so, I'm not surprised the crack keeps appearing as the wood will gradually 'move' with the seasons.  Decorators caulk is certainly flexible but if you then cover it with an inflexible filler then that filler will crack if the wood moves again.
A permanent solution would be to remove all the wood and brick up the doorway properly, but that's a much bigger job than just using some filler every couple of years.

I agree with what Mickey666 syas,
no idea what expanding foam filler is? regular expanding foam won't work though.
you could try this, use a pointy object and rake out all the old filler, make the crack 5-10mm wide and deep. hoover out all the dust, wipe it all down with a damp cloth and then use dri-wall adhesive to fill the crack in. mix it up so it's quite runny and get it squeezed right into the crack.
no guarantees, but thats your best bet. I had a similar crack at the top of 2 doors that kept re-appearing, I did this and they havent come back. yet

I agree with Mickey. The only sure way is to remove the timber and fill the hole with blockwork then plaster over. I had two doorways in my house that had been filled in, always cracked. This was the only permanent solution and not too expensive, although a lot more than a tube of caulk.
