  • I'm working in Poland for 4 months next year. I'm a little worried about the food situation, as I don't eat pork or red meat. Will I go hungry???

Of course not. Expect a very continental cuisine, quite similar to the German one.
Poles like to pickle their veggies, but there's all sorts of fresh stuff, too, all dairy stuff, poultry, excellent brown bread, virtually everything. Germans on the border love to go to Poland for their shopping, since it's considerably cheaper and the quality is fine. (And they have damn good sausages.)

Believe me, you'll love the grub.

    Schmansky,
your prayers have been answered; there is indeed now a Polish Grocery in Norwich: Polski Sklep (?) on Hall Road has been open for a few months now. It's just off the ring road and covers two shopfronts so should cater for at least some of your needs. No idea what's on offer or the prices but I'll be happy to take up your suggestions!
Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!
  • Up here in Selby we have a lot of Polish people - lots of the council-type signs are now in Polish and there are Polish books on the library shelves - so I guess we must have Polish food. I know on market days (Mondays mainly) we have stalls selling all sorts - not sure if it's all Polish, could be Ukrainian because we have lots of Ukraines here too! We have an Aldi - but I suppose most of their sausages and other meats are German. We are certainly trying to make the Polish people welcome here!
  • Portswood, Southampton .Lots of polish shops in this area.Visiting recently, and in a short walk down the road,I passed 4 of 5 shops with Polish signage. My niece, who lives there, tells me the Tesco has loads of stuff too.
  • Hereford is great for Eastern European food. (if somebody else has already posted this Im sorry for repeating), There are at least 2 shops devoted to Eastern European food in the city centre.

:T Thanks a lot for that. Will certainly pop in next time I'm in Norwich!
  • How about taking a cheap trip to Poland with one of the budget carriers? You can get a return for £35 inc tax, take a suitcase and fill it (up to 20kg) on return that way you get a good short break, and should almost break even with your suitcase full of goodies. (Best take some bubble wrap though)
You can't go wrong with carpet bombing...
  • Yes, I thought of that, but it's not really worth it unless for a longer visit. Might well be worth it one day, since the father's side of my family stems from the villages around Środa Śląska (Neumarkt) in Lower Silesia, not far from Wrocław (Breslau).

My family are all German (as far as we can trace back) but as I said, Polish and German food, especially in the formerly Prussian provinces before 1945, are very similar and have influenced each other for centuries. I suppose it's my Grandmother's cooking which made me start this thread. She swears on Krakowska and other Polish food, and so do I.

Thank you, MSE, for including this topic in the weekly email.
Also many thanks for the clean-up.

Can someone post a "glossary"; for those of us who are "newbies" to polish food culture?
