leaving BT rant

Options
Should I ever consider returning to BT, please shoot me in the knee. After 25 years we received the worst service in the country with their completely mind boggling pricing structure, price hikes during the contracts and lousy "loyalty" offers each year after haggling to a desperation point with an "advisor". I asked for a better modem every year and they kept sending me the same antiquated model. I was assured our line would be upgraded and they stopped work by the next village 4 miles away!  I decided to leave them after receiving a letter that my contract needed to be renewed. Said letter is not dated and they make it impossible to find when your contract runs out on your account page. Assuming it would be for the next payment date and as I had made up my mind I made arrangements with a different company first before calling BT to be told that I have to pay the early leaving fee. Then I spent half an hour on the phone with the "loyalty" advisor to get one simple answer - if they will refund me for part of the month I would no longer be using them after the changeover. "Let's check your bb speed", "I can offer you..£££ off...", "the other company cancelled the changeover request" - LIE, they hadn't!, "We can offer you fibre" - LIE, I know where the bloody cables are and they do not go to my house! So if you want a really competitive loyalty offer, do go all the way telling them that you have made up your mind to leave. I did NOT get an answer to my question btw. Her last offer was still worse than a 24 months contract with a guaranteed price with an ethical company.
I think whatever happens now I'll continue feeling relieved to have left them in the end, even with charges applied.

"price hikes during the contract" is in your T&Cs, which you would have noticed if you had read them.  Same principle applies at Sky for TV packages, one rise or 10%, whichever is the greatest.
And BT is rarely the cheapest anyway.
As for the refund, the normal way this works is you pay in advance for a month and then if you end up leaving halfway through the month you get a pro-rata credit refund.  So if you paid on the 1st, say £10 for arguments sake, then leave on day 15 of a 30 day month (for example), you would get 50% of that payment back, or £5.

No need to be rude. I am aware of the T&Cs but have now chosen a company that guarantees a fixed price over the contract. Thanks for the info on how they refund, much appreciated.

I don't think it was "rude", the answer to the bulk of the substantive of your post is featured in the T&Cs.  Which you clearly hadn't read.
That being said if people actually read their T&Cs properly we wouldn't have half the forum posts we do.  This is not a direct swipe at you, just to be clear.
