And does the British government want major airlines and holiday companies who pay decent money into the economy to go bust? See, this is the difficult position they are now in.
What action so far has the British Government taken to protect holiday companies?

Not aware of anything other than the furlough scheme. But if they are happy to see companies go to the wall because of this, so be it.

If this hasn't been tested through the legal system, Andyb46 would be best assuming the deposit is lost and anything else would be a bonus.
The principle that a company cannot keep a customer's deposit except to cover a loss/expenditure is very well established and tested. The article applies it to travel, but it applies to all consumer contracts.
However, I would agree that there are never any guarantees that a consumer will be able to enforce any existing law, which equally applies to getting the balance back.
It is that gap between your legal rights and the enforcement of those rights, that people need to consider when handing over a large balance simply to "guarantee" the return of their deposit, whilst assuming that they will definitely be able to recover that balance.

Nor am I, they had a  chance with RCN but no matter how many times ABTA ask the Government for backing, silence was the reply.

Like I said in a previous post, will be interesting to see who predicted the best.
I wouldn't put  money on my predictions, others might have more faith in their own.
