EE £500+ taken by DD

An elderly friend of mine just called me to ask advice.
She saw that he current acct was overdrawn, which she never is. She checked and saw that EE had taken £550 by DD. She contacted them and they said that two calls to the USA, one of 1hr. another of 2hrs. had been made in April. She hasn't made any such calls. Her son lives in the USA but she only ever contacts him by Skype. Her phone never leaves her handbag and the present circumstances mean she doesn't meet anyone except delivery people at her front door.
The number in the USA was unknown to her. She's waiting for EE to get back to her; they said they might take up to 72 hours. I wondered if anyone here might have an idea what has happened.

Can either she or her son confirm whether they spoke to each other - regardless of the method - at the times of these calls?
