14 Day Cancellation Charges

Hi all, looking for a little advice.
Recently signed up with Plusnet, waited 13 days for connection. On day of connection, we found out (told by BT engineer who visited) that we have a virgin telephone socket in main room where TV ariel socket is, where we want our router to hardwire to 4 devices (TV box, desktop, PlayStation, etc). Our BT box is in another part of house. The options weren't feasible to make the BT socket work (£160 relocation, 20 metre long adsl cable along floor, can't drill holes In rented accommodation, £50 in poweline adapters).
Anyway, to cut a long story short, we opted for the easier option of going with virgin telephone port in the same room we want the router.
So contacted plusnet within the 14 days to cancel (24hrs left), connection date was meant to be live the following day. Plusnet said if we cancel, they would keep connection fee and one month's Internet billing. The connection fee I understand, they had to call out a BT guy for the switch box... But can they claim one month's Internet billing, when we didn't get it setup, cancelled within 14 day cooling off period and cancelled one day before the date they said the service would start?

On the day of connection then the internet was deemed to have started so to cancel on that date entitles PlusNet under their terms and conditions to charged you for the month. You should look at it that you have saved a small fortune in relocation fees and buying powerlines.0
