1. the Word app (program in old money) is part of Microsoft Office; it may have been purchased when you bought your computer (or at any other time) but is NOT part of Windows.
2. wordpad is part of Windows and is a basic word proecessing app; it shares some document formats with word, principally rtf
3. if you have used word for document creation, generally you will not be able to use wordpad on the same documents
4. if you have used wordpad for document creation, generally you will be able to use word on the same documents
5. word online provides the same documenting formats as the word app; in order to use word online you will have to login to word online using a Microsoft account. https://office.live.com/start/word.aspx
6. the word app itself comes in 2 guises. stand-alone app - doesn't have to have a Microsoft account and 365 which does need a Microsoft accountCouple of points: Wordpad can open Word files, it'll lose most of the advanced functionality but the text will be there. All versions of Word and/or Office from 2013 onwards require a Microsoft account. 2010 was the last copy of Office that didn't require a Microsoft account.2 -

So you don't have Word, you're using the online offerings.qwert10 said:thanks so much! now it all becomes clearer. all documents have been created in word and as long as I am signed into Microsoft I can gt them in Word.

The computer did a big windows update which took ages then I opened my dissertation and it was in Wordpad not Word and a pop up said wordpad is not able to facilitate some of the features of this document - which is true it is useless. Then I realised that every file has been changed to Wordpad.
Word has disappeared off the computer and so has Microsoft office so no excel/presentation facility/paint etc.
Should I undo the windows changes or rest the computer? I wish I had bought a Mac now!
I'm guessing you're at university, your university may offer you a free subscription to Office365, which will allow you access to complete downloadable copies of Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc - you'll need to sign in with what MS call your "school" account - ie your uni email. Search your university's help pages to check.
Failing that, your Microsoft account will give you access to Word Online (Excel Online etc), but you will need to sign in to gain access to these.1 -
thanks all I will check with uni then the ict is more work than the masters!!0
