Has it actually removed Microsoft Word, or has it just changed the final association?
Go to your Start Bar and see if Word is still installed. If it is, just go to the File Association section (Settings > Apps > Default Apps) and change .doc and .docx to open in Word.
I've never had that happen though.3 -
It hasn't done anything like what you're saying. What it has done is associate the .doc (and/or .docx) extension with Wordpad rather than Word.
Search in settings for Default Apps: click Choose default apps by file type: find the file extension for your files and click on the current app; choose the app you want to use. Alternatively, find one of your files in Windows Explorer, right-click on it and select Open With: select the app you want to use and check the box for Always use this app.3 -
I am using Google Doc, Google Sheets etc but still for some important documents, I am using Ms Word. You can also use live version with Outlook. It will save all your files in drive as well.1

thanks sorry no reply but a broken arm came between us!
The computer did a big windows update which took ages then I opened my dissertation and it was in Wordpad not Word and a pop up said wordpad is not able to facilitate some of the features of this document - which is true it is useless. Then I realised that every file has been changed to Wordpad.
Word has disappeared off the computer and so has Microsoft office so no excel/presentation facility/paint etc.
Should I undo the windows changes or rest the computer? I wish I had bought a Mac now!

Well if you had Word before just reinstall it as you did before?(Word is not part of Windows, it never has been. You either had it before or you've removed it/done more than an update).2

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing in my case! I am afraid to say.
So the update had nothing to do with it just coincidence it happened immediately after.
I've looked around a bit and laptop says I am signed out of Microsoft somehow. would this affect word?
thanks all for the help

Did you actually have MS Office installed on your laptop or have you been accessing Office/Word etc online via your web browser.qwert10 said:

You could try a system restore...right click windows logo > search > type rstrui in search box > right click rstrui Run Command > Run as administrator, pick a restore point prior to the update, if there are any ?1

By strange coincidence I'm helping a local person out with similar misunderstandings... (hope this doesnt confuse OP!)
1. the Word app (program in old money) is part of Microsoft Office; it may have been purchased when you bought your computer (or at any other time) but is NOT part of Windows.
2. wordpad is part of Windows and is a basic word proecessing app; it shares some document formats with word, principally rtf
3. if you have used word for document creation, generally you will not be able to use wordpad on the same documents
4. if you have used wordpad for document creation, generally you will be able to use word on the same documents
5. word online provides the same documenting formats as the word app; in order to use word online you will have to login to word online using a Microsoft account. https://office.live.com/start/word.aspx
6. the word app itself comes in 2 guises. stand-alone app - doesn't have to have a Microsoft account and 365 which does need a Microsoft account
